Summary:
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Academy Instructor to teach a variety of adult ballet classes, including Beginner Ballet, Intermediate/Advanced Ballet, Introduction to Ballet, and/or Introduction to Pointe. The ideal candidate will inspire and guide students in their dance journey while contributing to the growth and success of Houston Ballet’s Academy Adult Program.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching and Curriculum Development
- Instruct Adult Ballet classes, including Beginner Ballet, Intermediate/Advanced Ballet, Introduction to Ballet, and/or Introduction to Pointe, focusing on technique, flexibility, strength, and artistry.
- Develop and teach warm-up routines, core strength exercises, and conditioning activities to improve overall dance performance and prevent injury.
- Adapt lesson plans to meet the varied needs and skill levels of adult students, ensuring a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
- Provide individualized feedback and guidance to help students progress in their ballet practice, enhancing both technical proficiency and artistic expression.
General Adult Education Responsibilities
- Establish a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in all classes to encourage adult participation and engagement.
- Communicate effectively with students to address their goals, challenges, and any personal needs, ensuring the development of a strong teacher-student relationship.
- Support students during classes, providing constructive feedback and fostering a positive, motivating environment.
- Encourage and promote a positive, safe learning environment, addressing any issues of conduct, safety, or classroom concerns.
- Stay current on teaching trends and adult education techniques, incorporating new methods to enhance student learning experiences.
Competencies & Skills:
The successful candidate will have:
- Demonstrated ability to work with adult learners, adapting teaching techniques to various skill levels, learning styles, and goals
- Demonstrated education and experience in classical ballet as a performer and/or teacher and a genuine passion for ballet, with the ability to foster a lifelong love of dance in others
- Ability to work successfully and collaboratively with a pianist
- Ability to demonstrate class material
- Strong verbal communication skills, capable of delivering feedback in a clear and encouraging manner to adult students
- Professionalism in all interactions, maintaining confidentiality where needed, and following ethical guidelines in all aspects of teaching
- Willingness to work collaboratively with other instructors and staff to ensure consistency and quality in program delivery
Work Environment:
- Indoor studio setting with adequate lighting, temperature control, and ventilation.
- Classes are scheduled Monday through Sunday, with a mix of morning, midday, and evening sessions.
