What are the responsibilities and job description for the Contingent-Administrative Support-Summer Youth Employment Program-(16–18 YEARS OLD -IN SCHOOL YOUTH) position at Howard County Government?
As a participant in this program, the SYEP Participant will be given the opportunity to earn a competitive wage while also learning valuable skills and gaining hands-on experience in various employment settings. Possible employment settings include community organizations, private sector companies, and government agencies.
Selected SYEP Participants will earn a competitive wage of $ $16.00 per hour (for 16- to 18-year-olds IN-SCHOOL). Please note that this salary is non-negotiable. Please also note that the program has been revamped with an emphasis on in-person worksites for youth who are 16 years old and older.
Because SYEP Participants may be assigned to organizations and workplace settings that differ substantially from one another, the specific duties and responsibilities assigned to an SYEP Participant will also vary depending on the position. Please note that reasonable accommodations may be made to help an SYEP Participant perform the essential functions of their position.
Some possible examples of duties and responsibilities an SYEP Participant may be assigned are:
- Performing basic administrative or clerical tasks, such as filing and scanning documents; tracking business expenses; documenting inventory information; answering and directing phone calls; attending and taking notes at staff meetings; preparing materials for trainings or orientation sessions; proofreading print and web deliverables and reviewing them for content, clarity, tone, and effectiveness.
- Contributing to activities that relate to the conducting of experiments in a laboratory or field setting, ranging from routine laboratory maintenance and inventorying and ordering lab supplies, all to the way to assisting with data validation, data analysis, or presentation of results.
- Supporting full-time staff in activities that relate to environmental preservation, such as monitoring groundwater and soil sampling; learning sample preservation, shipping, and chain-of-custody techniques; and drafting department-specific work plans, policies, and procedures for topics such as sampling methods, radiological services, quality control, health and safety, etc.
- Assisting full-time staff with activities related to managing the organization’s website or social media presence, including content creation, posts, lists, and graphics; assisting full-time staff with activities associated with the planning and execution of special virtual events.
- Working alongside full-time staff on organization-specific projects, supporting project managers and internal teams in activities associated with the day-to-day management of clients, workflows, budgets, and timelines to ensure organization-specific projects are positioned to meet organizational goals and client expectations; creating and managing tasks in project management software to keep work on track for milestone dates; and participating in brainstorming sessions.
- Other duties as assigned, according to the role.
The SYEP Participant:
- Must reside in Howard County.
- Must be between the ages of 14 and 24 years old.
- Youth applicants who are 16 or 18 years old must have access to a reliable internet connection and a computer with a working microphone and camera, as their employment may be virtual/remote.
- Youth applicants and young adults aged 16 years old and older must have access to reliable transportation, as their employment may be in person.
- There are no minimum education or experience requirements.
