This position serves as a receptionist and telephone operator for the Department of Social Services. Main responsibilities include directing customers to the appropriate person and/or location at DSS, reviewing applications before interviews for potential participation in programs, obtaining and entering data in database programs and maintaining hard copy filing system of clients.
STARTING SALARY FOR THE POSITION IS $33,946 ANNUALLY/$16.32 HOURLY
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Performs technical level administrative support work under general supervision from an administrative or technical superior. Work typically involves performing skilled clerical, stenographic, and typing tasks but may also include determination of weights at a sanitary landfill; collecting fees; operating scales and cash registers; keeping records of materials and money received; and performing routine clerical tasks in an accounting environment.1. Perform receptionist duties for customers who come to HC DSS for social services by greeting and directing customers with their initial contact with the agency using stated guidelines regarding confidentiality by the Agency in a courteous and professional manner.
2. Reviews applications as received for completion and date stamp before worker interviews DSS customers.
3. Performs automation functions for DSS programs.
4. Answers and directs telephone calls in a courteous and professional manner.
5. Maintains customer filing system.
6. Completes special assignments as directed by supervisor complying with the established deadlines and adhering to guidelines.High School diplomas or GED and two (2) years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
LANGUAGE SKILLS, MATHEMATICAL SKILLS AND REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
