Duties and responsibilities
- Supervise and direct the Counter Sales Staff.
- Enforce all company policies.
- Establish and maintain a comfortable and safe working environment for all employees.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with customers.
- Identify and respond to the need for personnel changes at the yard.
- Identity and articulate performance expectations to employees.
- Create and maintain a well-rounded staff through cross training, open communications and continuing education.
- Assist in the achievement of the company’s annual profit projections.
- Maintain corporate guidelines and criteria for customer service.
- Ensure cleanliness of yard is maintained.
- Ensure an appropriate level of inventory is maintained at the yard.
- Ensure merchandising programs are implemented.
- Conduct accident investigations.
- Chair the Safety Committee (yard level).
- Respond to customer complaints and concerns.
- Continually update product knowledge and selling techniques.
- Assist customers at point-of-sale, as needed.
Qualifications
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of lumber and plywood purchasing principles, practices and protocols.
- Knowledge of home and commercial construction principles, practices and protocols.
- Keyboarding at minimum of 30 wpm required.
- Ten-key by touch required.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and experience dealing with customers required.
- Ability to aggressively pursue company’s best interest when selling building materials to customers.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage time effectively.
- Ability to concentrate and attend to detail amidst a busy office environment.
- Ability to deal effectively with a variety of personalities.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to daily changing needs/demands of the department.
- Willingness to share department responsibilities in order to meet deadlines.
- Ability to effectively manage and motivate employees.
- Ability to work unsupervised and a desire for high level of responsibility.
- Must be tolerance of co-workers, knowing that honest mistakes will be made.
- Must be flexible to different personality types and work habits, knowing that goals may be achieved in different ways.
- Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications)
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Prior experience as a building materials salesperson preferred.
- Prior supervisory/management experience preferred but not mandatory.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 80 lbs.
- Ability to work outdoors and be mobile for the greater part of the day
- Ability to stoop, bend, walk, and effectively communicate at levels normal for someone performing work with the general public primarily in the office environment of a customer or job site. Communication forms can include but are not limited to: in-person verbal and non-verbal, written, e-mail, telephone and public speaking to medium size groups.
