COMPANY SUMMARY
This position is being posted for the Wilton Fire District. The Fire District, located in the Town of Wilton, is a special government established to provide fire protection for its residents. The firefighting force of the Fire District, provided by the Wilton Volunteer Fire Department, is 100% volunteer, comprised of 40-50 active firefighters. The Fire District, run by a board of five volunteer Fire Commissioners, provides the governance for the organization, overseeing emergency services, financial matters, etc. with the mission to preserve life and property; promote public safety, and professionally foster community support services.
POSITION SUMMARY
The District Station Keeper, reporting to the Director of Business Affairs on the performance of their duties, is responsible for the cleaning, maintaining, and repairing the equipment and facilities of the District; the duties of this position are multi-faceted and require the incumbent to understand various areas of building and equipment maintenance.
This position is a permanent part-time appointment in the Wilton Fire District, required to a work 28-32 hour work week. The incumbent will be expected to provide planned work hours in advance and will be required to work Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:00AM and 6:00PM; additional hours may be required outside typical office hours, including weekends and holidays, to handle facility related emergencies and/or ensure facility remains open and accessible in the winter.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs work under the general direction of the Chiefs Office and District Director of Business Affairs to maintain and repair the buildings, grounds and all District owned equipment
- Performs custodial type services including but not limited to, mopping, vacuuming, washing, scrubbing, buffing, and trash removal; maintains cleanliness of bathrooms, offices, apparatus bays and kitchens
- Performs general maintenance, installation, and repair tasks, light construction, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc.
- Performs maintenance and upkeep of vehicles and equipment and assists in the coordination of movement of fire apparatus; cleans and fuels apparatus and equipment as necessary, assists in the coordination of various equipment testing; maintains the Districts grounds, including but not limited to landscaping maintenance (pruning, mulching, weeding, rake and remove leaves / debris, etc.), lawn care (mowing, trimming, etc.), and snow and ice removal (plowing, snow blowing, shoveling, etc.)
- Manages equipment, and other assets of the District; scans and barcodes items into a record management system, maintains equipment logs, performs maintenance and repair, etc.
- Assists in procurement activities as requested, coordinates with vendors, requests quotes, meets with vendors and supervises work as needed
- Other duties as assigned or directed

QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required
- Must be able to climb ladders, and lift objects weighing up to seventy (70) lbs, required
- Must have at least three years of driving experience with a NYS Class D Driver’s License and be able to possess and maintain a valid Class D NYS Driver’s License acceptable to the District Insurance Carrier, required (CDL desired and considered in lieu of experience)
- Must be able to successfully complete driver training within six (6) months of hire to operate apparatus for the purpose of moving to and from scheduled maintenance locations
- At least one (1) year of verifiable experience operating snow clearing equipment including front mounted snowblowers, and snowplows, required
- At least two (2) years of verifiable experience in building, grounds, and small engine maintenance and repair, required
- Familiarity with Firefighting Equipment, desired
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORTS
- Regularly required to exert strenuous physical effort during all types of weather conditions
- Frequently required to move heavy loads (more than 70 pounds) without machine assistance many times during each workday
- Frequently required to access areas low to ground and areas accessible by ladder
- Frequently required to traverse around buildings, grounds and facilities, often with uneven terrain
- Regularly required to detect visual and audible warnings, read and understand signage, identify objects and materials to be properly disposed of
