Compensation Range
The base pay scale for this position is $495,000.00 - $540,000.00. In addition, this position will be eligible for additional benefits consistent with the role. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to : scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The hiring range listed is a good faith determination of potential compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.

In partnership with the Chief Digital Strategy Officer (CDSO) and other executive leaders, you will harness the power of data to advance clinical excellence, monitor musculoskeletal health at scale, and refine patient care pathways through cutting-edge research and innovation.
As the leader of the Data & Analytics team at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), you will have a unique opportunity to help develop and refine the largest curated musculoskeletal (MSK) data ecosystem in the world, alongside leading experts in medicine, research, data science, and technology. What you will be doing
Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), a world-renowned leader in musculoskeletal care and orthopedics, is seeking a Chief Data and Analytics Officer (CDAO) to lead its data strategy and analytics initiatives across the hospital system. This position will focus on advancing the use of data in clinical, operational, and research domains, driving improved patient outcomes, operational excellence, and groundbreaking research in the field of musculoskeletal health. The CDAO will collaborate closely with the Chief Digital Strategy Officer (CDSO), serving as their technical data dyad partner to align digital initiatives with organizational goals and operational needs.
The CDAO will oversee all aspects of data enablement, including data engineering, clinical informatics, analytics delivery (including data visualization), and ML / AI initiatives. Through close collaboration with clinical, research, technology, and administrative leaders, this role will define and execute the data strategy, establish scalable technical infrastructures, and guide the growth of a multidisciplinary data and analytics team. This includes ensuring that the cloud-based analytics stack is properly managed, data visualization and delivery are optimized, end-users (clinicians, researchers, and hospital administration) are effectively utilizing data products, and that there is a systematic intake process to capture and prioritize data needs across HSS.
Overall Responsibilities
Data Strategy, Governance, and Insights
Lead the development of a comprehensive data strategy aligned with the hospital's mission, overseeing governance to ensure data quality, integrity, and regulatory compliance. Collaborate with senior leaders to prioritize high-impact analytics initiatives that advance musculoskeletal (MSK) care and research. Leverage data to guide decisions, measure outcomes, and drive continuous improvement. Partner with the CDSO and technology teams to optimize clinical, operational, and patient data usage.
Technical Infrastructure & Cloud Stack
Lead the selection, implementation, and optimization of a cloud-based analytics infrastructure to support large-scale MSK data initiatives, partnering with internal IT and security teams, as well as external vendors, to maintain a secure, compliant, and performant data environment. Continually improve data pipelines to ensure high availability and scalability for both research and clinical operations.
Data Engineering & Clinical Informatics
Direct the data engineering function to enable efficient data ingestion, transformation, and integration across the hospital's systems (including EHRs and ancillary / distributed systems), while overseeing clinical informatics to bridge the gap between clinical workflows and data solutions. Coordinate interdisciplinary efforts to develop analytics solutions that enhance clinical decision-making and support ongoing and future research.
Analytics Delivery & Visualization
Lead analytics teams responsible for delivering actionable insights to a range of stakeholders, championing the use of SaaS-based data visualization (e.g., PowerBI, Tableau) tools for intuitive dashboards and scorecards. Establish and manage an intake process to prioritize and fulfill analytics requests, ensuring efficient resource allocation and timely delivery.
Machine Learning & AI
Oversee the machine learning and AI function to drive development of predictive models that enhance clinical outcomes and research efforts, partnering with clinicians and researchers for model validation. Ensure robust model governance, regulatory compliance, and performance monitoring, aligning AI initiatives with HSS's patient-centric vision.
Leadership & Team Culture
Recruit, mentor, and retain top talent in data science, analytics, ML / AI, and clinical informatics, cultivating a high-performing, collaborative team. Foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing across the Data & Analytics organization, and champion interdisciplinary partnerships with clinical, research, and administrative teams to drive data-driven best practices.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
Serve as the primary data leadership liaison to other hospital leaders, ensuring alignment between data initiatives, clinical needs, and strategic goals. Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences, and partner with academic institutions and research collaborators to advance global understanding of musculoskeletal conditions through robust data sharing.
Performance Measurement & Continuous Improvement
Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the impact of data initiatives on patient care, research, and operations, while continuously evaluating emerging technologies and analytics approaches to maintain HSS's leadership in MSK innovation. Promote data-driven methodologies that support evidence-based care and rigorous research standards.
Budget & Resource Management
Oversee the Data & Analytics budget to ensure optimal allocation of financial and human resources across diverse initiatives, while negotiating contracts and managing relationships with vendors, consultants, and technology partners. Provide regular reports on budget performance, resource needs, and anticipated returns on data investments.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Bachelor's degree in technology related field. Advanced degree in medicine, clinical informatics, or data-related field strongly preferred.
