What are the responsibilities and job description for the FORENSIC CHEMIST position at Hudson County Prosecutor's Office?
POSITION:
Forensic Chemist to work in the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor's new Forensic Drug Lab.
DUTIES:
Include but are not limited to:
Under supervisory direction, the Forensic Chemist will perform work involving the chemical analysis of various controlled substances submitted to the laboratory for identification in connection with criminal investigation and prosecutions;
Conducts tests to analyze and identify various known and/or unknown substances;
Operates various analytical equipment and instruments using various technical procedures and methods for analysis of evidence;
Ensures proper intake of and chain of custody of evidence;
Ensures proper destruction of evidence pursuant to all laws and regulations;
Makes findings and prepares clear and technically sound reports;
Testifies in court as an expert witness on the results of laboratory analyses, examinations, policies and procedures;
Maintains essential laboratory records and files;
Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems; and
All other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a physical science, which shall have included a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester hour credits in chemistry;
One year of experience in conducting various types of chemical tests, examinations and analyses in an analytical crime or forensic chemistry laboratory;
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, equipment and functions of forensic chemistry;
Knowledge of the care and routine maintenance of standard laboratory equipment;
Knowledge of chemical laboratory procedures, techniques, equipment and supplies used in making chemical and related microscopic tests, essays, examinations and analyses;
Knowledge of laboratory safety practices, procedures and hazards;
Knowledge of the preparation and content of laboratory reports concerning tests, examinations and analyses;
Ability to organize assigned chemical and related laboratory work, analyze problems in the field of forensic chemistry and develop effective work methods;
Ability to follow appropriate procedures and directives while conducting specific tests, examinations, essays and analyses;
Ability to safely and carefully utilize a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment;
Ability to prepare and maintain essential records and files;
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems;
Valid New Jersey State Driver’s License required;
Residency in the State of New Jersey within one year of hire; and
COVID-19 Vaccination.
