SUMMARY:

The Head Custodian ensures that District’s schools are maintained in a neat and sanitized condition providing a safe and clean work/learning environment in every way for teachers, staff and students. School Committee policies, Department of Labor Standards and OSHA regulations shall govern safety of operational techniques.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights and aid the Facilities Maintenance staff when required.
  • When school is in session assist the Principal, Assistant Principal and kitchen staff where required if requested to do so.
  • Supervise and work as part of the second shift team during overlapping hours to ensure that all areas of the school are being cleaned and quality standards are met.
  • Ensure that areas of the building are always in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition according to industry and/or district standards with steaming, misting and other equipment provided by the District. Frequency of the use of this equipment may change during cold and flu season to protect against the spread of virus and bacteria.
  • Pick up litter within the schools and on school grounds daily.
  • Assure safety during inclement weather to include shoveling, providing slip protection on wet floors, securing against wind damage, and snow removal by means of shoveling or mechanical methods (e.g. snow blowers).
  • Apply cleaning agents as directed by the Custodial Manager and in accordance with product directions and safety procedures established by the Custodial Manager and the manufacturer. Must be familiar with the use and purpose of MSD sheets (material safety data sheets).
  • Adhere to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.
  • Assist in the performance of minor repairs and maintenance as authorized by district maintenance staff, including electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Advise Director of Facilities or departmental Maintenance team members on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance issues utilizing the work order system.
  • Recognize the need for and initiate maintenance service requests according to district procedures.
  • Manage and maintain cleaning, paper and equipment supplies inventory; request cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Maintain awareness of energy conservation and initiate or make suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy.
  • Secure equipment and supplies and protect against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.
  • Conduct daily inspection and otherwise maintain awareness of facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage.
  • Coordinates staffing levels with the Custodial Manager to adequately cover absences or gaps in coverage. Call in staff as required for snow/ice events and inform the Custodial Manager of deficiencies.
  • Secure school building to insure proper security at all times. Ensure that exterior doors are locked and secure day and night and that all windows are closed at the end of the last shift of the day.
  • Lock, secure, and set the building intrusion alarm at end of last shift.
  • Assist in implementing emergency planning and response.
  • Provide direction, feedback, and guidance that will enable crews to perform their job requirements as directed by both the building administrators and the Custodial Manager.
  • Maintains appropriate professional, moral, and ethical relationships with students in a manner that reflects the high standards of behavior and professionalism required of school employees.
  • Assign work to subordinates including summer help, inspect completed work, provide training and guidance as necessary; provide input to Custodial Manager on overall performance and reliability of the staff and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties and work assignments as requested by his/her supervisor or building principal.
  • Duties and responsibilities may vary depending on shift assignment and school location.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Constant moderate physical effort is required, with occasional strenuous effort demanded. Position requires extensive walking, reaching, standing, stooping and climbing when performing functions. Occasionally required to lift, move, and/or push furniture and equipment which may weigh a minimum 30 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. Physical agility required to access all areas to be cleaned. May require the ability to work on ladders, staging, and scaffolding. May spend entire shift engaged in physical activity. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the major functions of this position.


Qualifications:

  • Three or more years’ experience as a custodian.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a culturally diverse environment, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
  • Must be able to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing with Administration, Teaching Staff, and the general public.
  • Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to work using ladders, scaffolding, and mechanical lifts.
  • High school diploma, completion of G.E.D., or equivalent vocational school
  • Basic computer skills for communicating with others such as Microsoft Word, Outlook for email and the absence reporting system. Ability to read basic operating instructions and write reports.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • Bilingual Preferred
  • Certificate of good health by a licensed physician.
  • Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (CORI), and fingerprints

WORK YEAR:

  • 12 months
  • 6:45am - 2:45pm Shift
  • Benefit Eligible on start date. 30 days to enroll in coverage from start date.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary (including step increases) and work year is established by the Superintendent of Schools in conjunction with the AFL-CIO, Local Council 93 Collective Bargaining Agreement.


EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the appropriate administrator in accordance with the AFL-CIO, Local Council 93 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

While performing duties of this job, the employee may often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee will have also have ample periods of standing and may be required to traverse throughout the building. The employee must frequently use hands and frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., calculator, copy machine, and computer printer).
Physical abilities may also include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field. Ability must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20lbs for short periods, and walk up and down stairs several times a day. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff members, and the public in person and on the telephone.
