Job Description

Geologist 9-P11
This position is responsible for conducting basic geologic/hydrogeologic site investigations using established geologic methods to fulfill the statutory responsibilities of the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to protect human health and prevent unlawful pollution of the surface waters and groundwaters of the state. Functions of this position include compliance oversight of Water Resources Division (WRD) programs related to emerging pollutants in assigned areas of the state. This position is responsible for permitting, compliance, and enforcement activities; data analysis; review and development of environmental reports; providing technical assistance; sampling and source investigations; and program support activities relating to emerging pollutants, particularly PFAS.

Geologist 12
This position serves as the recognized resource in the Water Resources Division’s (WRD) Emerging Pollutants Section for the Groundwater Program. This position is responsible for conducting and managing complex geologic/hydrogeologic site investigations, including compliance oversight, on a statewide basis using established geologic methods to fulfill the statutory responsibilities of the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to protect human health and prevent unlawful pollution of the groundwaters and surface waters of the state associated with emerging pollutants. Complex sites have multiple aquifer systems, glacial geology, groundwater/surface water interaction, a higher potential to impact the environment, and require greater coordination on multimedia issues with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. This position is responsible for enforcement activities, data analysis, review and development of environmental reports, providing technical expertise, developing and conducting sampling and source investigations, and program support activities relating to emerging pollutants, particularly PFAS. This position is responsible for management and oversight of internal grant/contract projects, which includes oversight of state contractors, establishing priorities, coordinating project activities and resolving issues as they arise. This position also serves as a technical resource and provides Groundwater Program support to WRD staff.


Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in geology, geological science, hydrogeology, geophysics, or geological, petroleum, or mining engineering.

Experience
Geologist 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Geologist 10
One year of professional experience in carrying out geological activities to protect, develop and maintain natural resources equivalent to a Geologist 9.

Geologist P11
Two years of professional experience in carrying out geological activities to protect, develop and maintain natural resources equivalent to a Geologist, including one year equivalent to a Geologist 10.


Geologist 12

Three years of professional experience in carrying out geological activities to protect, develop and maintain natural resources equivalent to a Geologist, including one year equivalent to Geologist P11.

Alternate Education and Experience

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in environmental geoscience, earth science, or environmental science with 15 semester (23 quarter term) credits in the following core geology classes: physical geology, sedimentology/stratigraphy, mineralogy/petrology, structural geology and field instruction; additionally, the candidate must have 21 semester (32 quarter term) credits in elective geology coursework; and two courses each in calculus, chemistry and physics. This may be substituted for the educational requirement.

The work location of this position will be Lansing, MI. However, the selected candidate may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule (combination of remote and in-person).

Vacation and Sick Leave: Eligible full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 personal days and 13 sick days per year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.
