Position Summary:
The Director of Coalitions within Federal and State Affairs is tasked with developing the overall strategic plan for coalition engagement for the policy, political and legal priorities for the Human Rights Campaign and cultivating relationships with political organizations, advocacy groups, and key political leaders to nationalize the policy challenges and attacks on the LGBTQ community and utilize coalitions to broaden the opportunities to advance LGBTQ equality and block harmful legislation in states and federally.
Position Responsibilities:
- Develop a coalition strategy to support the Federal and State Affairs priorities and coordinate coalition efforts by working closely with internal teams and external partners to align strategies, share resources, and amplify collective impact in pursuit of shared policy goals and political successes.
- Leverage partnerships to advocate for the organization’s federal, state and administrative policy priorities, using coalition building and joint action to influence legislation and public opinion on key issues – including LGBTQ equality and protecting policy gains for the community.
- Nurture ongoing partnerships to ensure successful collaboration, including organizing joint events and campaigns.
- Act as the primary point of contact for key partners and coalitions, providing regular updates on organizational initiatives, legislative priorities, and campaign (political) goals to ensure alignment and deepen engagement.
- Partner with the whole of HRC to tap into coalitions and deepen engagement in partnership with internal and external partners.
- Plan and coordinate meetings, webinars, and other events that bring together partners, activists, and policymakers.
- Collaborate to develop core resources for coalitions to utilize including compiled research, messaging, stories of policy impact and other HRC resources to enhance the work of coalitions and be a resource for partners representing broader coalitions.
- Contribute to the organization’s long-term growth by identifying new partnership opportunities and expanding the reach of the organization’s network and influence across the political and advocacy landscape.
- Create proposals, reports, and communications materials that highlight the organization's work, impact, and opportunities for collaboration.
- Represent HRC publicly at meetings, events, panels and other opportunities, and help develop or prioritize meetings and events for HRC leadership.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications:
- At least 8 years of experience in the non-profit, campaign or advocacy spaces with a strong background in coalition leadership, building and engagement; partnership development; and stakeholder engagement.
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse partners, including grassroots organizations, advocacy groups, and political leaders is essential.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
- Able to manage short-term and long-term projects.
- Flexibility with work schedule; this position does require evening and weekend work.
- Must have excellent writing skills and strong verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
