Position Description
Position Title: Dog Trainer
Hours: One or Two 50 minute classes per week (Sunday and/or Monday Evenings)
Supervisor: Development Manager
Classification: Contracted
SUMMARY
The dog trainer runs and directs one to two 50 minute classes for dogs/owners to use positive reinforcement to teach attending dogs how to problem solve and make good decisions on their own. The course taught will promote positive, trusting relationships and effective communication between the dog and their owner. Development and refinement of the courses provided will meet the guidelines of HSHV’s mission.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
-This position requires a compassionate, objective, calm yet energetic individual who possesses excellent problem solving, verbal and written communication skills, and sound judgment.
-Must be able to interact in a positive and professional manner with all departments/staff within HSHV.
-Must have professional dog trainer certification through CCPDT, KPA, IAABC, ADT, or PPG.
-Trainer must provide their own Liability Insurance.
-Must use positive reinforcement based training and adhere to the "Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive" Humane Hierarchy model of behavior change.
-Must have experience teaching adult dog and puppy basic obedience classes.
-Will not use or recommend choke, prong, or shock collars, or other aversive training devices.
-Able to provide professional and client references.
