EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Plans, schedules, supervises and reviews the work of Deputy Sheriffs and other staff and activities on a shift or in a specified function; implements organizational policy to achieve Sheriff's Office goals and objectives.
- Serves as positive role model for subordinate deputies, assists in providing for their professional development and ensures the appropriate workplace behavior of assigned staff.
- Participates in the hiring of assigned staff, recommending selection for management approval.
- Trains staff in work procedures and provides technical assistance in difficult situations as required; conducts regular briefings with assigned staff.
- Evaluates employee performance, counsels employees, and effectively recommends initial disciplinary action and other personnel decisions.
- Supervises by radio or in person deputy response to a variety of law enforcement situations, provides guidance and direction to deputies, and interprets points of procedure, policy and regulations.
- Supervises and coordinates crime scene activities, guides and directs deputies and ensures crowd control and the protection of evidence and the scene.
- Performs complex investigative work in a variety of areas; interviews victims, witnesses and/or informants to obtain relevant information; approves investigative techniques of assigned staff; conducts administrative investigations as directed.
- May participate in special projects to prevent crime or apprehend possible suspects.
- Patrols an assigned area to observe, supervise and instruct subordinate deputies; assists or provides direction to deputies with unusual, complex or emergency situations.
- Responds to and resolves citizen complaints regarding departmental activities, within established guidelines and authority.
- Reviews submitted reports and records and directs corrections as needed; prepares reports and statistical data and maintains a variety of records.
- Conducts periodic inspections and ensures proper appearance and condition of uniforms, equipment and department facilities.
- Maintains liaison with other law enforcement departments, agencies and the courts.
- Prepares and releases information to the public and/or media in accordance with department policy and applicable law.
- Personally performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, suspect pursuit and apprehension and case preparation and testimony.
- Testifies as subpoenaed in court.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS
All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
