We’re on the lookout for bright minds to join our summer internship program and embark on a journey of growth, learning, and hands-on experience! An internship with Hunter Industries complements university coursework, provides first-hand experience of working in the real world, and the opportunity to develop relevant skills and knowledge for career readiness.

The Experience

  • Final Showcase: Interns will share their journey and achievements through a presentation to a large group of leaders and peers at the end of the program.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Mechanical Engineer Intern in Product Lifecycle Management, your project will consist of 3D and 2D design and documentation for existing product families of mechanical components and assemblies used in irrigation systems. You will perform design and engineering on a product, verify design accuracy and manufacturability, specify and perform functional and/or assembly testing to establish specifications and requirements and collect, analyze, and report data to support design specifications. You will apply engineering principles and judgment with skills and knowledge gained during the internship to create and/or update design specifications for selected product families. Additionally, you will develop your CAD modeling and drafting skills, gain hands-on experience in a design and manufacturing setting focused on injection molding, and enhance your technical knowledge and documentation experience.

What You’ll Learn

You will have the opportunity to gain real-world experience with CAD software, technical documentation, injection mold tooling and processing, polymer materials, manufacturing and quality process controls, and identifying and solving open-ended product design problems. You will learn about engineering considerations that must be made during the product design process, including material selection, statistical process control concepts, reliability testing, and documentation and reporting. You will collaborate with a broad range of departments and personnel to broaden his/her knowledge of mechanical engineering work in a design and manufacturing setting. You will also receive hands-on training and practice opportunities to develop CAD skills, technical documentation, reliability test specification, and data reporting. Additionally, you will have ongoing opportunities to shadow experienced engineers in various meetings with Product Reliability, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing Engineering, and Product Management.

What We’re Looking For

  • Driven college students, or recent college graduates, with a major or degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Determined go-getters with excellent problem-solving skills who embrace challenges
  • Collaborative and curious individuals that are eager to learn
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in CAD Software: PTC Creo or similar (SolidWorks, Inventor), Statistics, Mechanics of Materials/Deformable Bodies, Fluid Mechanics, Manufacturing Processes, Mechanical Design, and Microsoft Office

Selected candidates must be available to work on-site and full-time between June and August.

  • Hourly Pay: This internship is paid $24 per hour.

Other Job Functions

Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

It is the responsibility of all Hunter employees to keep themselves and others safe. Employees are required to complete all mandatory safety trainings, know Hunter’s safe work practices, use the appropriate personal protective equipment for the job, and immediately report all injuries, near misses and hazardous identifications to a Supervisor or the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Department. Those employees who do not comply with safe work practices may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Employees in management positions have an even greater responsibility that includes modeling safe behavior, ensuring employees on the team are following all safe work practices and completing training, and taking part in injury/illness investigations. A safe workplace must be the goal of everyone at Hunter Industries.

Physical Demands

Ability to sit for extended periods of time to use the computer, to perform paperwork activities, to attend meetings, etc. Intermittent walking to gain access to areas within the facility.

Ability to climb stairs to gain access to the upper-level work area.

Finger dexterity sufficient to use a computer and to complete paperwork activities.

Visual acuity sufficient to use a computer and to read and complete written documents.

Hearing sufficient to communicate with individuals by telephone and in person.

Ability to bend, lift and carry books, files and office supplies and other items weighing up to 30 pounds.
