Position Overview

Performs routine operational support and required maintenance work. Monitors defined treatment processes by reading and interpreting meters and gauges; maintains operating efficiency of valves and pumps; performs analysis of processes through sampling. All work is performed within accordance and strict compliance of State of Colorado, City and Federal environmental statutes and governmental department regulations.

What you'll do

  • An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. (These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.)
  • Oversees the process of pumping wastewater generated from the printing operations area within the production facility to the onsite 5,000-gallon collection and holding tank.
  • Insures that transport lines to the onsite collection and holding tank are clear and obstructed; that recirculation pumps are operating efficiently and that flow rates and controls are within operational tolerance guidelines. Takes immediate action to notify pump or transport line repair / service companies to correct and resolve problems as soon as they are discovered.
  • Monitors digital readouts and records intake and retention levels available within the collection and holding tank prior to pumping materials to it.
  • Activates and monitors system controls where an air operated diaphragm pump is engaged and moves the wastewater along to the additional holding tanks whereby mixers continuously distribute and suspend the mixture to prevent sedimentation from occurring.
  • Draws jar samples to analyze measurements of wastewater mixture contained within the holding tank to determine correct level of additives to floc the mixture and pH levels to optimize chemical reactions within the treatment system. Monitors and continually observes digital readouts of the process to make necessary adjustments to additives due to variance levels within the mixture.
  • Monitors mixture as it is pumped through the filter press. Makes adjustments to filters to insure that they are operating correctly and efficiently. Removes from each screen of the filter press captured solid waste for disposal.
  • Reactivates pump and opens lines for transport and discharge to receiving waters of the publicly owned treatment works (POTW) collection system of the city.
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Position requires regular and predictable attendance.
  • Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job.
  • Completes and files with appropriate governing agencies, various reports that are mandated by Federal, State and local regulations in order to operate a IWTS for the business organization.
  • Flushes retention tanks and cleans the general treatment plant area as part of basic equipment maintenance and upkeep according to equipment and established industry standards.
  • Insures that all safety equipment is operating within first class condition; is stored properly during non-use times, and is correctly used during times of usage.
  • Responds to inquiries and works with governing agencies and their representatives in the course of the operation of the IWTS.
  • Communicates on a frequent basis with the Manager Safety / Environmental, Project Engineer and other representatives of the business organization on matters relating to wastewater treatment and adherence of environmental statutes.

Who you are

An employee in this position, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following

  • Solid knowledge of the safe and correct procedures to be followed in operation of an
  • IWTS.
  • Solid knowledge of the startup operation and both the normal and emergency shutdown of an ITWS.
  • Solid knowledge of wastewater chemistry to monitor pH levels and chemical reactions as they occur.
  • Solid knowledge of and experience with the conversion of units of measurement into another using appropriate references and formulas.
  • Solid knowledge of the operation and required maintenance of recirculation pumps and filter presses.
  • Solid knowledge of preventative and corrective maintenance procedures for all IWTS equipment.
  • Solid knowledge of and understanding of electrical concepts such as, AC / DC, volts, amps and hydraulic concepts such as pressure, flows, velocity.
  • Solid knowledge of health and safety regulations governing on-site chemical storage.
  • Solid knowledge of the proper use and conditions within the workplace that require personal protection equipment / gear to be worn and used.
  • Solid knowledge of jar sampling techniques and proper testing methodology.
  • Solid knowledge of recordkeeping and record retention practices to operate an IWTS.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining effective work relationships.
  • Ability to read, interpret and understand the significance of information presented within graph form including, line, bar, percentage and broken line.
  • Ability to interpret and understand electrical schematics and construction drawings.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers and decimals to perform necessary calculations such as pumping and flow rates.
  • Ability to analyze cause and effect relationships in a problem and develop resolution alternatives.
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions by applying standards and available information to specific situations.
  • Ability to identify potential hazards and recognize situations of potential liability to the business organization and to take appropriate action as needed.
  • Ability to define and establish corrective and preventative maintenance procedures for operational equipment.
  • Ability to use trouble shooting techniques to resolve minor operational problems with the equipment.
  • Ability to use correct English grammar and usage to complete required reports and composes general correspondence.
  • Ability to demonstrate a willingness to maintain a current body of knowledge pertaining to IWTS and federal, state and local environmental statues.
  • Ability to perform work duties in a self-directed manner with limited supervision.
  • Acceptable training and experience includes a high school diploma or equivalent. A willingness to pursue continuing professional development and education within the field of industrial wastewater treatment is required.
