Position Summary
Provides safe and efficient transport for assigned patients and patient related items throughout the hospital in a courteous and professional manner thus enhancing patient satisfaction whether in a primary or supervisory role.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Coordinates daily department activity to ensure Unit Transporters are assigned, pertinent information is communicated to staff, staffing levels flex with volume when appropriate, and daily transport data is accurately recorded on a timely basis. Serves as a Dispatcher or coordinates the rotating coverage at the dispatch desk.
2. Coordinates the training/mentoring of new staff and ensures the transportation of patients and patient related items as dispatched in a safe and efficient manner following the protocols established by the hospital and its departments. Ensures Transport staff undertakes patient transports which are accompanied by an SBAR and the SBAR is reviewed for transport specific information (e.g. O2, aspiration risk, fall risk, etc…).
3. Ensures compliance with Infection Prevention protocols by washing in/washing out as appropriate (i.e. alcohol or soap/water) as well as properly disinfecting, cleaning and storing equipment at the completion of a transport along with the on-going encouragement of staff to do same. Conducts periodic audits of those activities to ensure department compliance.
4. Ensures correct patient ID utilizing two patient identifiers one of which is checking the patient’s wrist band before commencing a transport. Encourages staff to do same through periodic reminders. Conducts periodic audits of those activities to ensure department compliance.
5. Ensures serviceability of transport equipment by facilitating the inspecting of wheelchairs and stretchers prior to use and the utilization of a “Red Tag” in the event of a need for equipment repair. Coordinates the periodic physical inventory of equipment.
6. Assists the Adm. Director Medical/Surgical in various management functions including staff scheduling, training, auditing, documentation, etc.
