The Direct Support Professional (DSP) - Day Program is responsible for providing care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities in a day program setting. The DSP helps individuals participate in structured activities, community outings, and skill-building exercises, focusing on promoting independence, socialization, and personal growth. The role involves hands-on support, assisting individuals with daily needs, and helping them achieve the goals outlined in their Individualized Service Plans (ISPs).

The DSP in a day program setting creates a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where individuals can thrive.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Direct Support and Daily Care:
    • Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, toileting, eating, and mobility support during day program activities.
    • Support individuals in participating in planned activities such as arts and crafts, games, exercise, or community-based outings.
    • Foster a positive environment that encourages individuals to socialize, engage with peers, and participate in group activities.
    • Monitor and assist individuals with personal needs throughout the day, ensuring comfort and well-being.
  2. Person-Centered Planning and Support:
    • Implement and follow each individual’s Individualized Service Plan (ISP), ensuring that activities and support are aligned with their goals and preferences.
    • Encourage independence by providing individuals with choices and promoting decision-making in their daily activities.
    • Collaborate with individuals, families, and the program team to ensure services meet their unique needs and help them achieve their personal goals.
  3. Community Integration and Engagement:
    • Accompany individuals on community outings, such as shopping trips, recreational activities, or volunteer opportunities, ensuring their safety and inclusion.
    • Promote community integration by encouraging participation in local events, activities, or educational programs that align with individuals' interests.
    • Assist with transportation to and from community activities as needed, helping individuals navigate their environment with confidence.
  4. Skill-Building and Personal Development:
    • Provide support for skill-building activities, such as communication, social skills, vocational training, and life skills development.
    • Encourage individuals to set personal goals and work towards achieving them, offering guidance and support along the way.
    • Create opportunities for individuals to learn and practice new skills, building their confidence and independence.
  5. Behavioral Support:
    • Provide support to individuals with challenging behaviors by following behavior support plans and using positive reinforcement techniques.
    • Use de-escalation techniques when necessary to manage behavioral crises and ensure the safety of all individuals.
    • Reinforce positive behaviors and encourage individuals to build emotional regulation and coping strategies.
  6. Health and Safety:
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals in the day program, following safety protocols and emergency procedures.
    • Monitor individuals’ health status, reporting any concerns or changes in behavior to the Day Program Manager or healthcare team.
    • Administer medications or support individuals in taking their medications as prescribed, following proper documentation procedures.
  7. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of individuals’ activities, progress, and any incidents that occur during the day program.
    • Complete required reports, including progress notes and incident reports, and submit them in accordance with organizational policies.
    • Participate in team meetings, providing insights and updates on individuals’ progress and offering input on service adjustments.
  8. Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with other DSPs, program coordinators, families, and healthcare providers to ensure consistent, high-quality care.
    • Communicate openly with supervisors and team members about individuals’ needs, progress, and any concerns.
    • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to stay informed and enhance skills.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Additional training or certification in developmental disabilities, caregiving, or healthcare (preferred).
  •  

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or in a similar caregiving role (preferred).
  • Experience in a day program or community-based setting is a plus.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of person-centered planning and the unique needs of individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to provide direct care, including assistance with daily living activities and personal care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with individuals, families, and team members.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviors and respond to crises with patience, empathy, and professionalism.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety protocols in a day program setting.
  •  

Required Certifications (Must Have):

  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Prevention and Support
  • Article 9
  • Medication Administration Certification (Preferred - willingness to obtain).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to assist individuals with physical activities, including personal care, mobility support, and transfers as needed.
  • Must be able to engage in physical activities with individuals, including recreational activities, outings, and exercise.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings, based on the needs of the program.
  • Proficient in navigating high-stress situations by employing de-escalation techniques to achieve productive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated mental and emotional acuity in managing individuals in dysregulated situations.
  • Finger and manual dexterity.

Additional Requirements:

  • Background check clearance as required by state and federal regulations.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if transportation of individuals is required).
  • Social Security card
  • Valid fingerprint Card
  • Commitment to ongoing training and professional development.

Salary Range:

  • TBD (depending on experience, location, and organizational budget).
  • Benefits may include health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and opportunities for professional development.

Working Conditions:

  • The DSP works primarily in a day program setting but may also accompany individuals on community outings and external activities.
  • The role typically involves standard daytime hours between 8am – 5/6pm, though flexibility may be required for special events or activities.
