The Role
We are seeking a seasoned Captain to join our team, leading marine tours through Alaska's breathtaking landscapes. This is a seasonal position available from April to October in Hoonah, AK.
Responsibilities
- Steer and operate vessels safely and efficiently, adhering to set courses and speed.
- Oversee deckhands, directing them to perform tasks such as docking and undocking vessels, navigating through tight spaces, and maintaining the vessel.
- Inspect the boat regularly, ensuring compliance with Coast Guard regulations and addressing any maintenance issues promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of daily activities, personnel reports, ship positions and movements, weather conditions, passenger status, and counts.
- Deliver excellent service to guests, showcasing your expertise as a Captain while adhering to proper uniform guidelines.
- Participate in regular drills, including fire, flooding, man overboard, abandon ship, medical, and spill response, documenting these events and educating deckhands on lifesaving and firefighting equipment.
- Manage inventory of vessel supplies, notifying your supervisor when replenishment is required.
- Clean and maintain the vessel after each tour, disposing of waste, hosing down the vessel, washing windows, and restocking as needed.
- Maintain awareness of workplace safety and respect for the environment, completing additional tasks as assigned.
- Document tour passenger counts and fuel expenditures daily.
Requirements
- Three years of boat operation experience.
- A minimum of a 25-ton USCG Master's License (50-ton for 49 Pax boats).
- Extensive knowledge of Coast Guard and CFR 46 regulations relevant to the vessel type.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification and Radio Operators License.
- A spotless driving record and eligibility for Icy Strait Point insurance.
- A commitment to learning about Tlingit culture and acquiring knowledge of local marine life, flora, fauna, and avifauna.
- Excellent customer service, communication, and presentation skills.
- Persistent physical capabilities, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for long periods, walking 5 miles daily, and working in a remote, rural community.
