POSITION SUMMARY:

The Packaging Supervisor plays a vital role as part of the production team. He or she must have sound knowledge of all powder storage and packaging equipment, understand and ensure established SOPs and SSOPs, and operate packaging equipment within the designed efficiencies. The Packaging Supervisor assists in and is responsible for, the development and training of packaging team members. As part of his or her role, periodic review of members is necessary to ensure all are up to date on current issues, revisions to product lines, HACCP, GMP and Food Safety issues and personal knowledge relating to his or her job. He or she ensures that all documentation is timely, accurate, and complete and verifies all documentation and labeling of packaged products is accurate. The Packaging Supervisor will be working with the packaging production coordinator to monitor CCP, weight checks, and SOPs. As this area contains one of IMP’s Critical Control Points, a daily review of charts, records and corrective actions is mandatory. Fast and thorough follow-up of any issues relating to food safety is associated with this process. This is a key role in our organization that requires good leadership and interdepartmental communications while managing change requests from the Quality Assurance, Production, and Sales departments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Packaging Supervisor works independently and must be able to handle a variety of complex tasks simultaneously:

Production Management

  • Audits cleanliness of storage silos, lines, and packaging equipment in accordance with SSOPs.
  • Ensures packaging team completes pre-operational checks on all equipment before starting a process.
  • Ensures packaging team has correct code dates, lot numbers, and product information for each product line.
  • Reviews production report for accuracy.
  • Develops and maintains daily/monthly sanitation schedules assisted by Sanitation Supervisor.
  • Develops and maintains firm communication with Packaging and Warehouse Operators.
  • Reports all information to Production Manager and Production Supervisors, pertaining to daily verifications or issues.
  • Enforces Plant, HACCP, GMP, Training, and sanitation policies.

Cost

  • Works with Packaging team to maintain efficient use of equipment, space, and materials.
  • Verifies weight control checks and sample procedures are in accordance with SOP’s.
  • Monitors loss caused by torn or misused packaging materials, sample bags, scoops or other consumables.
  • Manages schedule to ensure control of overtime.
  • Performs weekly inventories on all packaging supplies and works directly with the Procurement Manager to place orders for supplies.

Delivery

  • Ensures packaging team arrives for work and are at their stations ready for work at scheduled times.
  • Offers ideas and suggestions on “How to Improve” the process and System SOP’s, SSOP’s and Sanitation Program.

Safety

  • Complies with all OSHA and plant published safety regulations.
  • Submits ideas and suggestions on how to improve safety.
  • Communicates safety issues and concerns to the Production Manager.
  • Maintains valid fork-lift operating certification and ensures all team members that are required to drive forklift are certified.

Morale

  • Leads, Facilitates, Coaches, Mentors, and Develops team members.
  • Participates as a member of the team and treating others in like manner.
  • Supports greater employee involvement and actively participates all duties.
  • Fosters teamwork and communication by example.
  • Provides team members with the tools necessary to do jobs safely and efficiently.
  • Has an open door policy.
  • Utilizes shift pass-down meetings and plant meetings to communicate ideas and suggestion for improving plant operations.

POSITION SPECIFICATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Required: High School Diploma/GED or equivalent work-related experience.
  • Preferred: Four-year degree, preferably in Dairy science or in a related field.

Experience:

  • 5 years experience in the dairy food industry, preferably production.
  • 3 years experience managing personnel and complex activities.
  • experience in a dairy packaging department.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regular ascending and/or descending of ladders and stairs using feet and legs and/or hands and arms on a regular basis. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances on a regular basis.
  • Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time on concrete.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist on a regular basis.
  • Reaching: Extending hands and arms in any direction.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees occasionally.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Lifting: Able to lift up to 50lbs on a regular basis.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.  Includes activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Subject to up to at least 92db’s.

  • Strong technical skills:  proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook, and databases.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
