Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a temporary Electrical Shop Technician I to join our Substation Construction team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does an Electrical Shop Technician I do for us?
Under close supervision, this position is responsible for the assembly and testing of substation and power plant protection, communication, control systems, and supporting equipment. Systems include protective relaying, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), metering, digital fault and sequence of event recorders, remote terminal unit (RTU) configurations, programmable logic controller (PLC) cabinets, and smart grid monitoring systems. This is an entry level position that is beginning to develop proficiency in a range of operational processes.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
  • Related OSHA regulations and chemical safety material
  • Electrical circuits and theory
  • Three-phase power systems
  • Utility system practices
  • Safe operation of hand and power tools used in the electrical trades
  • Electrical and electronic schematics
  • Protection and communication schemes
  • Computer operation
  • Substation construction and maintenance techniques
  • AC/DC circuit theory
Skills in:
  • Interpersonal communication and effective verbal and written communication
  • Trouble-shooting and operating test equipment
  • Soldering
  • Doble test set
  • Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Other databases, software, and systems including AssetSuite, Meridian, AcSelerator, BI Launch Pad, Protest, engraving software, and OTL operational software
Ability to:
  • Work simultaneously on multiple projects, successfully meeting deadlines
  • Produce technical reports and documents
  • Read and understand substation and power plant drawings
  • Establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with co-workers and others
  • Work independently and be self-motivated and flexible meet project deadlines
  • Apply established guidelines
  • Use good judgment and initiative in resolving work problems

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
  • High school diploma or GED and vocational degree in electrical or electronic systems
OR
  • Completion of a related Apprenticeship training program
OR
  • 4 years of utility industry work experience that includes at least 1 year of electrical assembly and wiring experience, or military training in an electrical or industrial construction discipline
OR
  • An equivalent combination of electrical assembly and wiring education, training, and experience

Licenses & Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days of hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position performs manual dexterity tasks and repetitive gripping (up to 80 lbs. force) in utilizing hand tools on a constant basis to assemble electrical components and control panels. Lifting of up to 110 lbs. and pushing/pulling up to 60 lbs. is required occasionally. Sustained postures are required with crouching, kneeling, bending/stooping, twisting, and reaching to access areas of control panels. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the DOT medical certificate. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. This job may require the performance of additional tasks assigned by company leaders or management. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
May occasionally be required to work overtime, outside in adverse weather conditions, and travel across the Idaho Power service area, with overnight stays up to 8 days when necessary.
Temporary employees are eligible to apply for internal job postings. Internal, regular employees who are successful candidates will be placed as regular employees in a Temporary Duty Assignment job classification. In order for your current position to be held for your return, qualified employees must have supervisory approval to participate and have been in their current position for at least six months.
