Electrical Engineer II - Power Systems at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Boise, Idaho, United States Job Description Overview The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy. Responsibilities Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical / electronic systems, components, equipment, and networks as well as their control and optimization theory and techniques. Adapts and applies control theory to design electrical / electronic systems with desired behaviors. Designs, develops, installs, and supervises all aspects of control systems and processes. Determines design approaches and parameters. Analyzes equipment to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests, and evaluates results. Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability. Researches, develops, and applies tools, simulations, and models of electric power systems and components addressing problems in planning, operations, economics, resilience, and optimization of system performance. Designs and develops new techniques and methodologies for control and integration of diverse energy resources and points of consumption. Develops and applies system architectures, models, and technologies for secure and reliable electric power systems and related technologies such as communications systems and grid cyber security. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications : BS / BA and 2 years of relevant experience OR MS / MA OR PhD Preferred Qualifications : Proficient in one or more programming languages (Python, MATLAB, etc.). Has applied scientific & engineering principles and theories to develop technical approaches to solve challenges. Experience with power system modeling tools.o Steady state power analysis (PowerWorld, PSSE, etc.).o Dynamic and real-time simulation platforms (OPAL-RT, EMTP, etc.). Familiar with the use of laboratory instrumentation (oscilloscopes, signal generators, amplifiers, etc.). Familiar with programming power system protection and control equipment. Demonstrated potential to successfully support Laboratory-based R&D projects by providing high quality technical deliverables. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and a capability and willingness to learn NDE data acquisition / analysis / modeling software.
