Post Bachelor Research Associate - Software Engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Boise, Idaho, United States Job Description Overview PNNL's Earth System Science Division enables energy independence and national security through leadership in earth systems science, engineering, and decision analytics. Our work focuses on solving complex problems in the dynamic Earth system. Our interdisciplinary scientists steward a breadth of efforts that encompass research on plants to groundwater science and coastal zones, to storm prediction. Our research focuses on understanding and mitigating operational risks at the interface of human and natural environments. This includes predicting the impacts of natural hazards and extreme climate events on Earth and human systems, along with the impacts of wildfire, flooding, sea level rise and storm surges. We focus on understanding and mitigating environmental contamination and increasing the resiliency, security and sustainability of water resources. We provide geointelligence through advanced sensing and data analytics to forecast complex system behaviors and operational performance to understand human-natural systems. This includes informed decision making and enhanced community resilience, advanced monitoring, and remote sensing of environmental systems for energy and national security. It also includes developing energy systems, including geothermal energy, sustainable oil and gas production, storage and utilization, along with carbon sequestration. Driven by a 'science-to-solutions' philosophy, we provide scientific leadership and technology to enhance national security, mitigate natural hazards and optimize disaster response. In the critical areas of energy, environment, intelligence, and defense, we deliver insights and decision support through the development of tools and solutions. If you answered yes, join our team in the Applied Decision Systems & Analytics Group within the Earth System Sciences Division. Designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs new and existing software systems, hardware / software interfaces, and / or applications according to industry established software engineering principles and best practices. Works collaboratively within a team to execute on the full system development lifecycle including analyzing user needs to determine technical requirements; developing technical specifications based on conceptual design and requirements; developing well-crafted and documented source code; integrating hardware using software; automating manual tasks; and consulting with the end user to prototype, configure, refine, test, and debug programs or systems to meet needs. Identifies and evaluates new technologies or methods for implementation and continuous improvement, such as evaluating potential AI / ML techniques. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications : Candidates must have received a Bachelor's degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Preferred Qualifications : Previous work experience at a National Laboratory Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar educational background with a 3.5 GPA or better. Software Engineering skills including algorithm design and implementation, troubleshooting, deployment, documentation, security, and testing. Programming experience in one or more of the following languages : C, C , C#, JavaScript, PHP, Python Understanding of web application (full-stack) development concepts; software tools, methods, and platforms. Ability to develop and maintain software applications for both client to server and web deployment, including continuous integration and version control. Experience with software engineering methodologies, design, and implementations. Experience with AI / ML techniques, such as ResNet. Foundational knowledge of the software lifecycle and engineering best practice, including specification, documentation, configuration management, testing and quality assurance. Web basics including HTML5, CSS3, Restful API design. Advanced web technologies including Typescript, Nativescript, Canvas. Web Libraries such as React / Redux, OpenLayers or equivalent GIS framework, D3.js, and Three.js or equivalent 3D modeling framework. Databases including relational database applications (e.g. MySQL, ORM, SQL Server, and SQL Query language). Command line tools including PowerShell, Bash, AWS cdk, npm, other sdks Hazardous Working Conditions / Environment Not Applicable.
