Job Description
The Animal Care Facility Manager plans, organizes, and directs animal research facilities on campus, and provides fiscal management of the facility. This position is responsible for day-to-day supervision and management of facility staff, and provides care for animals used in teaching and research projects.
The manager must ensure that animals are cared for in compliance with state and federal laws and in accordance with The Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and accreditation standards. The individual in the position may be asked to serve on or consult with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct facility operations and coordinate resources to support multi-disciplinary animal research
- Develop, modify, and implement programs for the use and care of animals
- Maintain animal health records and coordinate with the Attending Veterinarian on disease or illness to implement treatment plans
- Procure animals for teaching and research projects
- Fiscal management of facility; develop budgets and monitor expenditures; maintain facility inventory; order supplies; develop recharge rates
- Liaise with vendors and negotiate agreements for animals, supplies, and equipment
- Hire, train, and evaluate performance of animal care facility staff and student workers
- Conduct trainings for facility staff, researchers, and students
- Supervise waste collection and disposal per federal standards
- Monitor and maintain environmental conditions of the facility (e.g., temperature, lighting, cleanliness, etc.)
- Manage facility/equipment maintenance, repair, and upgrades
- Feed, water, clean, and exercise animals; perform diagnostic tests, administer injections, administer anesthesia, and assist in surgical procedures; supervise selective breeding programs, if needed
- Serve as an animal care resource across campus, and remain competent and current in laboratory animal science; attend university meetings and trainings as applicable
- Professional communication with employees, students, and other university and department staff to maintain a workplace environment with continuity, consistency, and professionalism
- Ability to work a regular schedule consistent with the needs of the university is an essential function of this position
- All other Reasonable Duties as Assigned
This position is considered essential university personnel and is required to respond or to delegate response after hours and during university emergencies and closures. This is an on-campus position in Pocatello, with occasional travel to other campus locations. This position will report to the Associate Vice President for Research.
Success in this position requires the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, strong organizational skills (i.e., analyzing workflow, establishing schedules and procedures), effective documentation and maintenance of laboratory records and reports, and commitment to delivery of superior customer service and professionalism.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, or 6 years of equivalent experience
- 2 years working in a laboratory animal facility
- Experience supervising or training staff
- Ability to develop and manage a budget
- Knowledge of federal animal care regulations and American Association for Accrediting Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards
- Ability to obtain a controlled substance license
Preferred Qualifications
- 6 years working in a laboratory animal facility
- LATG or LAT certification through AALAS
- Experience working with different stakeholders (faculty, staff, students, vendors, and IACUC)
- Demonstrated management experience
- Experience participating in regulatory or accreditation inspections

Salary will be between $52,000 - $64,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
