The medical billing manager oversees the entire medical billing process within the practice, ensuring accurate and timely submission of patient claims to insurance companies, managing billing staff, maintaining compliance with regulations, and maximizing revenue collection by monitoring accounts receivable and following up on outstanding payments; they act as the primary expert on billing codes, procedures, and regulations, constantly analyzing data to identify and implement improvements to optimize cash flow.
Key responsibilities include:
- Staff Supervision: Leading and managing billing specialists, including assigning tasks, performance evaluations, and training on coding and billing procedures.
- Claims Submission: Overseeing the accurate entry of patient demographics, diagnosis codes, procedure codes, and other necessary information for claim submission to insurance companies.
- Compliance Management: Staying updated on all healthcare billing regulations and ensuring the billing department adheres to HIPAA, ICD-10, CPT coding guidelines, and other relevant standards.
- Accounts Receivable Management: Monitoring outstanding patient balances, identifying and addressing billing errors, and actively following up with insurance companies to expedite claim payments.
- Revenue Cycle Optimization: Analyzing billing data to identify areas for improvement, implementing strategies to reduce claim denials, and maximizing reimbursement rates.
- Reporting and Analysis: Generating regular reports on key billing metrics such as collection rates, denial rates, aging of accounts receivable, and presenting findings to leadership.
- Payer Relations: Building relationships with insurance companies to negotiate contracts, resolve billing disputes, and stay informed about policy changes.
- Patient Interaction: Addressing patient billing inquiries, explaining financial responsibility, and resolving billing issues.
Required skills :
- In-depth knowledge of medical billing codes (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS)
- Understanding of insurance payer regulations and reimbursement methodologies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Leadership and team management abilities
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and billing software
- Experience with Nextech or Compulink EHR preferred
- Ophthalmology, Optometry, or Vision Care experience highly recommended
