This position is responsible for performing skilled carpentry work in all of the Department’s facilities. If you have played an active role with estimating projects, constructing or altering furniture systems, and have the skills necessary to juggle multiple projects and complete both verbal and written work orders, then we want you! Essential Functions
- Under direct supervision, performs maintenance, repair or alteration of Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) owned furniture systems and equipment.
- Performs skilled carpentry work in the construction and alteration of offices at IDOR facilities.
- Utilizes and maintains common carpentry tools and equipment.
- Plays an active role in design build solutions, up to and including determining material specifications, quantities needed, and cost estimation.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
- Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.
Preferred Qualifications
- Eight (8) years of experience working with of the tools, materials, methods and standard practices of the carpentry trade.
- Six (6) years of experience assembling/disassembling, maintaining, repairing, or altering office furniture systems and walls.
- Six (6) years of experience in woodworking techniques (creating, designing. building custom cabinetry/millwork) to meet specifications.
- Six (6) years of experience operating carpentry equipment, including table saws, band saws, jointer sanders, drill presses, etc.
- Six (6) years of experience reading, interpreting, and working from blueprints, simple sketches, and drawings.
- Four (4) years of experience estimating time, labor, and materials necessary to complete work orders.
- Four (4) years of experience receiving, reading, completing, and maintaining records for both verbal and printed work orders.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, reach above shoulder level and climb a step ladder during the performance of duties.
