Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a Corrections Vocational Instructor for the Sewing/Garment/Knit Shop at Centralia Correctional Center.  This position instructs individuals in custody in the safe operation of the garment shop, preventative maintenance of shop equipment, and inspects all finished goods for quality control.  We invite all qualified individuals to apply. 

Essential Functions

  • Instructs individuals in custody in the safe operation of Garment Shop at Centralia Correctional Industries Unit and gardens. 
  • Provides individual in custody workers with practical knowledge and work skills to facilitate student entry into a garment production trade.
  • Inspects all finished goods for quality control.
  • Instructs individual in custody workers on the preventative maintenance of shop equipment and tools.
  • Maintains all Departmental and Institutional safety, security, and sanitation procedures are followed.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires two (2) years of practical journey level experience in a sewing, garment or knit shop.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least one (1) year experience working in and industrial garment shop.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year work experience training individuals in proper operation of industrial equipment.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year work experience maintaining operating records of production.
  • Prefer at least one (1) year experience maintaining inventory of raw materials and operating supplies.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year work experience counting inventory.

Preferred Qualifications Continued

  • Prefers at least one (1) year work experience completing daily logs for accountability of tools.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year work experience inspecting finished products.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year work experience conducting proper preventative maintenance on equipment used in an industrial garment shop.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year work experience with safety and security procedures.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year experience working in a correctional facility.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in correctional officer training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
