Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Technician II at Hidden Springs State Forest.  This position will: operate bulldozers, backhoes, tree spades, aerial lifts, chippers, stump cutters, and end loaders for site renovation/construction projects, wildlife farming programs, road repairs, fire land maintenance and trail repairs; mow grass and cut brush and trees using such equipment as hand mowers, bushhogs, and chain saws; sell camping and firewood collection permits and collects fees; and clean and disinfect restrooms.  The Hidden Springs State Forest, formerly known as Shelby State Forest, is a 1,200-acre park located near Clarksburg, 10 miles southeast of Shelbyville in Shelby County, Illinois. This scenic forest is named after the seven hidden springs once used by early settlers for drinking water. Originally planned as a state lake, it was later designated as a state forest, offering a wide range of outdoor activities and opportunities to explore the beauty of nature and wildlife. Essential Functions

  • Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled and routine tasks while engaged in maintenance and program support projects at Hidden Springs State Forest.
  • Through manual labor and the operation of trucks and tractors, performs routine maintenance on site grounds.
  • Assists in implementing the safety and security programs at the site.
  • Makes repairs to buildings and equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with the maintenance of site buildings.
  • Provides leadership and direction to seasonal and volunteer employees.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
  • Two (2) years of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.

3. Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
4. Requires physical ability to operate and maintains tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
5. Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
6. Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
7. Requires ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR Certification.

The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Work Hours: 2 Schedules 

Schedule 1: 7:30 am to 3:30 pm M-F Jan- April, June, Aug and Oct 16h - Dec
Schedule 2: 7:30 am to 3:30 pm Fri- Tues May, July and Sept - Oct 15th
