Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Stationary Engineer for the Elizabeth Packard Mental Health Center located in Springfield, Illinois to receive day to day guidance and assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer. Installs, maintains and repair various and moving equipment machinery weighing up to 50 pounds (100 pounds with assistance). Makes rounds of buildings’ boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals to assess the operation and efficiency of all machinery and equipment and to detect potential mechanical problems.  Test and records water used for consumption or used for other systems and adds appropriate chemicals as needed for proper maintenance of systems.  Confers with Center with Center staff, Facilities Manager or Region Manager to resolve problems related to building services.  Travels in the performance of job duties.

Essential Functions

  • Receives day to day guidance and assignments from Chief Stationary Engineer.
  • Makes rounds of buildings' boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals to assess the operation and efficiency of machinery and equipment and to detect potential mechanical problems.
  • Makes and records tests of water used for consumption or for generating steam and hydraulic hot water, chilled water systems and adds appropriate chemicals for proper maintenance of systems including chilled and hot water loops and cooling towers.
  • Confers with tenant agencies to resolve problems related to building services.
  • Travels to various sites to assists other facilities in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning of systems and equipment.
  • Completes all mandatory training for compliance with all regulations for Mental Health Centers.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of eight (8) years of elementary school. 
  • Requires four (4) years’ experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low pressure stationary boilers. 

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires possession of or the ability to obtain a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under USEPA Section 308 Rules.

  • Requires the ability to perform various tasks such as lifting and moving equipment/machinery up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance). 

  • Requires the ability to utilize agency supplied materials/equipment (i.e., cellphone, pager, blackberry, etc.).

  • Requires an appropriate, valid driver’s license and the ability to travel.

  • Requires the ability to work shifts, including weekends and holidays for emergency situations.

  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.

  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.

  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Work Hours: 5-week rotation, with rotating days off. See below.

Week 1: 6:00am - 2:00pm Mon/Tues, 7:00am - 3:30pm Wed - Fri, Off Sat/Sun

Week 2: Off Mon/Tues, 7:00am - 3:30pm Wed, 2:00pm - 10:00pm Thurs/Fri, 10:00pm - 6:00am Sat/Sun

Week 3: Off Mon/Tues, 6:00am - 2:00 pm Wed - Sun

Week 4: 10:00pm - 6:00am Mon - Wed, Off Thurs/Fri, 2:00pm - 10:00pm Sat/Sun

Week 5: 2:00pm - 10:00pm Mon - Wed, 10:00pm - 6:00am Thurs/Fri, Off Sat/Sun

The lunch period on 8 hour shifts is 30 mins paid. The lunch period length on 8.5 hour shifts is 30 min unpaid.
