Position Overview
The Illinois School for the Visually Impaired is seeking to hire a Stationary Engineer to perform preventive and repairs on mechanical areas at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. This position performs repairs on mechanical areas, including but not limited to, HVAC, domestic water, sewers, power plant equipment, generators, dietary equipment, etc. The Stationary Engineer monitors and adjusts all aspects of the HVAC system daily and serves as a liaison. This job position maintains daily logs and prepares reports on gauge readings, fuel consumed, power generated, maintenance work performed and similar information and conducts daily testing of boiler water and pool water.
Essential Functions
- Performs preventive maintenance on mechanical areas, including but not limited to HVAC, domestic water, sewers, power plant equipment, generators, dietary equipment, etc.
- Monitors and adjusts all aspects of the HVAC system daily.
- Performs repairs on mechanical areas, including but not limited to, HVAC, domestic water, sewers, power plant equipment, generators, dietary equipment, etc.
- Serves as a liaison.
- Maintains daily logs and prepares reports on gauge readings, fuel consumed, power generated, maintenance work performed and similar information.
- Conducts daily testing of boiler water and pool water.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years elementary school.

Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low pressure stationary boilers.
- Requires possession of or the ability to obtain a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under USEPA Section 308 Rules.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to perform the physical functions and tasks associated with engineering including but not limited to overhead work, ladder climbing, squatting, kneeling, bending and walking.
- Requires the ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs. independently and up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Requires the ability to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Requires the ability to serve on an on-call basis.
- Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers and agency supplied material/equipment (i.e. cell phone, etc.).
- Requires a valid appropriate driver’s license and the ability to travel.
- Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
- Requires the ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois law.
- Upon employment, employee will be subject to Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test.
- Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
