JOB TITLE: Deckhand
REPORTS TO: Blast Foreman and Superintendents
Summary of position: Position requires willingness to learn, and the ability to follow directions concerning blasting in the marine industry. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner.
Essential Job Requirements: Perform duties associated with blast operations; maintain a clean work environment in location of blast operations; test and repair any non-working blast hoses; assist foreman with marking-up of work areas/tanks as directed; remove grit as directed by foreman; keep dust collector clean/in working order; change filters in dehumidifier as needed; must work within OSHA requirements relative to the shipbuilding industry; must comply with company, federal, state, and local safety and environmental rules and regulations; accurately operate, clean, and maintain all assigned equipment; properly store equipment; must be able to correctly and promptly follow directions. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner. Overtime or shift work involved most of the time.
Required Education: None
Required Experience: Formal or informal on the job training and/or one year experience in the marine industry.
Required Skills: Ability to take direction required. Must be able to work cooperatively and productively with other employees and shipyard personnel.
Physical Requirements: Regularly required to walk; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, or crawl at various heights and in confined spaces; occasionally required to sit; required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip, or handle; regularly required to safely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; required use of vision to see up close, distance, and peripherally, as well as depth perception and ability to adjust focus in low light conditions. May be required to wear a respirator to safely perform assigned tasks. Must be able to follow clean shaven policy.

Equipment Used: Blast pot, hopper, forklift, dust collector, industrial vacuum units, pressure washer, air compressors, hoses, ductwork, pneumatic tools, electric tools, hand tools, vacuum bottles, compressed air, and other tools used in the maritime blasting and coating industry. Items listed are a representative sample but not an all-inclusive list. Blast equipment can be stationary, or trailer mounted. May include the operation of abrasive recycling systems.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Working Conditions: Repetitive, physical work. Regularly exposed to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, dusty conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, hazardous machinery, confined spaces, precarious places, proximity to other employees. Often works on scaffold & ladders for periods of time.
Safety: To avoid injury, personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, such as safety clothing, safety devices to protect eyes, head, hearing, and other items/practices to protect personnel from bodily harm.
