W3 Marine, a division of Ryan Infrastructure Services, is conveniently located across from Norfolk Naval Shipyard on the Elizabeth River between the downtown tunnel and the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge. Specializing in marine construction, stevedoring, pile driving, clamshell bucket dredging, floating crane, deck barge and marine towing operations since 1987.
W3 is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Deckhand to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the Hampton Roads waterways, possess the necessary certifications and endorsements, and demonstrate strong marine construction skills.
Key Responsibilities:
In this role, you will work closely with the dredging crew to ensure the efficient operation of dredging activities, contributing to our mission of maintaining and enhancing waterways.
Responsibilities
- Support for berthing and unberthing procedures as the ship comes into or leaves port
- Customer service in assisting passengers as they board or disembark, such as managing ticket collections and ensuring safe boarding mechanisms are in place
- Assist in the operation and maintenance of dredging equipment, ensuring all machinery is functioning correctly
- Perform deck operations, including line handling, surveying, and preparing the dredge for operations
- Monitor and report any hazards or issues to the supervisor to maintain a safe working environment
- Maintain cleanliness and organization on the dredge and surrounding areas
- Participate in safety meetings and training sessions to ensure adherence to safety protocols
- Routine maintenance, particularly simpler tasks that don’t require an engineer or specialist
- Managing lines or rigging in keeping with the type of ship or boat
- Loading, unloading or otherwise managing or overseeing cargo
Required and Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Required)
- Previous experience in a maritime or construction environment, preferably in dredging operations (Required)
- Ability to work long hours in varying weather conditions (Required)
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team (Required)
- Certification in marine safety or related fields (Preferred)
- Experience operating heavy machinery or dredging equipment (Preferred)
- Familiarity with dredging processes and equipment (Preferred)
- Basic understanding of maritime safety regulations and practices (Preferred)
- Ability to use hand and power tools effectively and safely (Preferred)
- Strong commitment to safety and attention to detail
- Positive attitude and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
