Interpreter Job Description
The Interpreter will provide a variety of interpreting services for Deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and community members. This includes class lectures and other presentations from English to American Sign Language (Voice-to-Sign) and from American Sign Language to English (Sign-to-Voice).

The Interpreter will provide a variety of interpreting services for Deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and community members. This includes class lectures and other presentations from English to American Sign Language (Voice-to-Sign) and from American Sign Language to English (Sign-to-Voice).
Key Responsibilities:
- Follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct in providing confidential and professional interpreting services.
- Interpret or transliterate class lectures, presentations, events, and activities such as field trips, student-teacher conferences, special meetings, tutoring sessions, and other co-curricular activities.
- Assess individual situations to determine the communication needs of Deaf or hard of hearing consumers and adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, including students, faculty, staff, and other interpreters.
- Work independently and confidentially while maintaining accurate records of services provided.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related field (or equivalent experience) and completion of Imperial Valley College's interpreter evaluation with a Level III score required.
- National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Advanced or Master level certification preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- RID Code of Professional Conduct.
- American Sign Language (ASL).
- Cultural and social aspects of the Deaf community.
- Correct English usage and grammar.
- Vocabulary and concepts used in a wide variety of college-level courses.
- Trends, techniques, and developments in the interpreting field.
- Ability to interpret messages from English to American Sign Language (Voice-to-Sign) and from American Sign Language to English (Sign-to-Voice).
- Ability to assess individual situations to determine the communication needs of Deaf or hard of hearing consumers.
Work Environment:
- Classroom and office environment.
- Outside events and possible driving to conduct work as required by position.
