The IMRIS Surgical Theatre enables intraoperative imaging directly within operating rooms. The Company also designs and manufactures proprietary head fixation devices, imaging coils and OR tables for use in this unique and multifunctional intraoperative environment. It is estimated that over 70,000 patients have benefited from lifesaving or life-extending procedures performed in an IMRIS Surgical Theatre. IMRIS will continue to integrate new intraoperative imaging technologies and shape the future of neurosurgery in operating rooms worldwide.
We are currently searching for a Principal Machinist to join our team. This role will be performed on-site and is based in the Greater Boston area at Superconducting Systems Inc. (SSI) in Billerica, MA. Please note: There is no relocation offered for this role. The ideal candidate should reside in the Greater Boston area.
The Principal Machinist independently fabricates parts and builds assembly of parts to be used in mechanical devices and ensure unit performance meets specifications. Possesses demonstrated mastery of troubleshooting and repair of mechanical assemblies. Documents methods and techniques used for testing and troubleshooting. Plans, organizes, and cooperates with co-workers to achieve best product outcome. Leads continuous improvement efforts related to production procedures and provides coaching to less experienced technicians.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Program and operate CNC machines
- Operate and maintain manual lathe and milling machines.
- Review drawings, instructions, blueprints or samples to ensure accurate production.
- Take precise measurements for cutting or shaping.
- Select appropriate machine and settings for a given task.
- Plan proper sequence of tasks to complete the assignment.
- Monitor production, adjusting feed and other settings as necessary.
- Maintain inventory of completed products.
- Check output for quality assurance and documents or discards defects.
- Identify need for and perform machine maintenance and minor repairs.
- Maintain a safe and clean workstation.
- Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
- Provide technical support in implementing, maintaining and troubleshooting existing products
- Perform quality assurance testing during assembly to detect and prevent defective components from installation & reaching the end user
- Analyze results on defective units to determine cause of failure and repair
- Complete and maintain all required documentation including test results and other pertinent records
- Identify discrepancies in requirements and work with manufacturing engineering to resolve them
- Provide direct engineering design support, implementation, documentation and testing effort for development projects assigned
- Assure engineering designs adequately meet quality, safety, regulatory compliance, serviceability and test standards
- Ensure production equipment meets preventative maintenance and calibration requirements
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
- Reports to the Director of SSI
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
- 10 years of experience in manufacture of parts using lathes and milling machines.
- Experience in assembly and test of machined components
- Associates degree or higher preferred
- Strong project management skills
- Excellent organizational and problem solving skills, with an eye for detail
- High level of electrical and mechanical aptitude
- Understanding of ISO 60601, FDA, and NEMA standards related to Class III medical devices.
- Experience working with technical parts and inventory.
- Excellent skills with various fasteners, lubricants, adhesives, hand, power and torque tools to manufacture mechanical and hydraulic assemblies
- Physical requirements include standing, walking, stooping, reaching and repetitive movement of both hand six to eight hours daily. Good manual dexterity and ability to lift up to 50-70 lbs. on an occasional basis are also required.

- Must work safely and be safety-conscious at all times
- Must have good interpersonal skills and be capable of communicating effectively and working cooperativity with all levels of personnel within the organization
