Financial Accountant
Independence Community College is seeking a Financial Accountant to assist the Controller in the preparation and maintenance of financial records in accordance with accounting principles. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all financial operations.
The Financial Accountant is a full-time, 12-month classified salaried position with a salary range of
$50,000 - $55,000, commensurate with qualifications, job knowledge, and experience. This position reports directly to the Controller.
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with procedural standards.
- Manage and reconcile accounts, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
- Assist in budget development and monitoring to align with institutional goals and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate audits and prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees and governmental agencies.
- Analyze financial data to provide recommendations for improved financial performance and forecasting.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations by monitoring legislative changes and enforcing adherence to requirements.
- Provide financial data support for grant applications and reporting.
- Collaborate with various departments to streamline financial processes and enhance operational efficiency.
- Assist in tax filings and compliance documentation.
- Prepare periodic financial reports for management as needed.
- Complete monthly bank reconciliations by the 15th of the following month.
- Maintain knowledge of financial policies, regulations, and best practices.
- Proficiently use Ellucian Colleague and Intuit QuickBooks software.
- Record and reconcile ACH payments and deposits monthly.
- Create and input journal entries for the Business Office and campus departments.
- Set up and assess student charges, importing bookstore, library, and meal charges to student accounts.
- Assist with reconciliation of federal funds and filing record retention.
- Contribute to the completion of the annual financial audit.
- Support the creation and management of Board of Trustees financial reports and business intelligence dashboards.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Controller.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of two years of accounting experience; experience in education or fund accounting preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and fund accounting.
- Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, and Colleague.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of complex formulas and functions.
- Strong understanding of financial regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Ability to build effective communication and interpersonal relationships across the institution and the community.
- Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Light work with occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
