Indian Creek School is an independent, co-ed day school in which 587 students aged 3 to Grade 12 partner with innovative teachers in an outstanding educational program. Located on a beautiful, 114-acre campus in Crownsville, Maryland (just north of Annapolis), ICS students are nurtured and known as individuals while being challenged to discover their passions, purpose, and potential. ICS seeks a teaching fellow for the 2025-26 school year who supports our mission and values, is committed to nurturing learners as individuals, and is looking to join a vibrant community of professionals who are passionate about education. This position is a part-time (two sections), two-year, 10-month position that reports to the divisional principal of their placement.

Program Overview: The St. John's and Indian Creek School Teaching Fellows Program offers aspiring educators the opportunity to gain practical teaching experience in an independent school environment while earning a master's degree from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. This unique partnership affords fellows a meaningful, job-embedded experience to launch their teaching career and complete a master's degree with base tuition covered by St. John's College and Indian Creek School.

Program Structure: Fellows commit to a two-year teaching experience at Indian Creek School, teaching two class sections annually. These classes will be assigned based on school needs and fellow expertise. Fellows will also concurrently enroll and complete a master's degree from St. John's College.

Professional Growth Opportunities: As part of their work at ICS, the teaching fellow is mentored by the department chair of their teaching assignment. This work includes support in lesson planning, instructional design, instructional coaching, and classroom management. In addition, fellows will have access to all divisional, departmental, and all-school professional development meetings and events. As part of their studies at St. John's College, the Fellow is mentored by the Associate Dean through regular meetings with the Fellow to discuss educational leadership, pedagogy, and general career trajectories.

Master's Experience at St. John's College: Fellows will have the opportunity to create, within the Master of Arts degree, a "Focus" in one of the five segments that comprise the degree. The Associate Dean will work with each Fellow upon matriculation to create that "Focus" area and, upon completion of the degree, write a narrative explanation of the field-specific coursework the Fellow completed. Like all Graduate Students at St. John's College, Fellows join a lively and intense learning community and work alongside faculty and other graduate institute students to pursue foundational and enduring questions of human value. The Graduate Institute offers a seminar every summer. Through a series of canonical readings ranging from Plato to Dewey the seminar examines central questions in the goals and methods of education. Fellows would have priority access to this seminar.

Requirements for Application: All fellows must have completed a bachelor's degree to apply. Required submissions include a cover letter stating interest in the fellowship, a college transcript, a current resume, and admissions essay for St. John's College. In this essay we ask you to reflect on your own education thus far -- its strengths and weakness, highlights and disappointments -- and why the Graduate Institute at St John's is a community of learning that marks a natural next step in your education and your vocation as a teacher."

Timeline: Fellowship applications are due by January 31, 2025. A formal interview process will follow for qualified candidates, including a required on-campus interview for those identified as finalists in the search.

Benefits


Fellows Compensation: Fellows are compensated by ICS at a part-time rate at the AIMS 50% median salary for first year educators. Fellows are exempt from overtime and are not eligible for benefits through Indian Creek School. The salary for year two will reflect a standard annual faculty increase. Fellows will receive five sick days and two personal days annually. Fellows are eligible for additional compensation by taking on an athletic coaching role in the Middle or Upper School responsibilities at Indian Creek School. An additional benefit of daily free lunch is provided to ICS teaching fellows. As part of the compensation package, St. John's College and Indian Creek School will cover all tuition costs for the master's degree program.
