Inpatient/ER Nurse Manager: Functions as first line supervisor in the management of Inpatient Units [M/S, OB, Pediatrics] and Emergency Department where nursing services are provided on a 24-hour a day seven days a week basis. Participates in the development of the provision of care programs policies and procedures. Audits the implementation and effectiveness of Nursing Care programs for appropriateness of the nursing services provided. Assists the DON in providing nursing leadership and acts as a resource person for the nursing staff. Participates in the decision making processes and nursing research to modify and/or improve the delivery of care in the Health Services Program. Provides rotational on-call for 24 hour nursing management coverage in all nursing programs. Reports directly to the Director of Nursing Services. Duties: Establishes and maintains standards of patient care by providing leadership and direction for Inpatient and Emergency Room Staff in all areas of nursing practice. Responsible for compliance with Joint Commission accreditation, state and federal guidelines, Medicare and Medicaid criteria, conditions of participation, Managed Care and IHS guidelines, and nursing statutes in relation to the Alaska Board of Nursing. Provides supervision for the programs, assuring staffing is appropriate to meet program, patient and school of nursing preceptor needs, training is given as needed and approving work schedules for all unit staff. Coordinates services with other programs. Serves on various hospital committees as assigned. Encourages and facilitates participation by nursing staff in Unit and MHC activities. Participates in organizational activities and provides leadership in program improvement activities. Maintains Program Budgets with budgetary guidelines makes revisions to budgets as necessary, and promptly reports any discrepancies to the DON. Coordinates collection, analysis, and preparation of information required to evaluate nursing services provided, and reports in a timely manner. Assists with research and development of Nursing Policies, Procedures and Protocols.Implements standardization of Nursing Policies and Procedures. Ensures consistency with association and MHC wide policies and procedures. Participates in activities, which promote professional growth and fulfillment of goals for self and staff. Identify and monitor staff development needs and make referrals as indicated to nursing education/staff development. Maintain nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training clinical staff with prudent utilization of Agency nurses. Ensures that nurses are current in competency, assessments, licensure, certifications and other annual training. Manages all Inpatient and Emergency Room nursing staff disciplinary actions and implements Performance Improvement Plans as needed. Completes Performance Reviews on all staff in a timely and appropriate manner. Demonstrates and holds all staff members accountable for a positive customer service attitude at all times. Utilizes team building, problem solving skills, and lean principles, in the on-going quality improvement initiatives. Qualifications: Associate or Diploma in Nursing from an Accredited College [Bachelor degree preferred]. Must have U.S. RN license in good standing and be eligible to apply for an Alaska licensure as a Registered Nurse. Five or more years of health care experience preferably at least one year in health care administration. Knowledge of State and Federal regulations and Joint Commission standards. Ability to work cooperatively with employees, outside agencies and the community. Knowledge of current theoretical approaches to nursing care, research and strategies. Knowledge of leadership, management and performance improvement concepts. The ability to participate in developing and implementing strategies to address opportunities for improving the delivery of nursing care to patients.
