Job Summary: The Kewa Pueblo Health Corporation seeks proposal for a contract Child Psychiatrist to provide contract clinical services at the Santo Domingo Health Center. Position Details: The Child Psychiatrist is responsible for providing therapeutic mental health services to children, adolescents, and families. In addition, this position emphasizes community and interagency liaison efforts on behalf of children and families. Position Information: Contract Position, 16 hours a month Duties: Essential Duties, Functions & Responsibilities: - Provides diagnostic, treatment, and referral services for child adolescent psychiatric patients. Conducts individual, family, and group psychotherapy using a range of accepted treatment modalities which are cultural sensitive and acceptable and which are adapted to needs of the patient. Coordinates services to patients with service unit psychiatrist and other service unit personnel. - Provides consultation to personnel, public and private resource agencies to assist clients and patients in resolving medical, social, and emotional problems. - Participates in and/or initiates educational and preventive efforts in the Santo Domingo Pueblo. Is actively involved in developing preventive and health promotion activities in the schools and human service agencies. - Provides crisis intervention services to individual youth and families in specialized situations such as rape, child abuse, family violence, environmental catastrophes, suicide attempts, abortion counseling, and alcohol and drug abuse. - Leads, directs, and extracts information from individual and group discussions. This may include members hesitant to reveal or discuss personal problems due to cultural and educational barriers. - Provides mental health services in the field and in the Health Center. Conducts home visits for the purposes of providing individual and family therapy and for providing follow-up on patients who have recently suffered an emotional crisis or who have had records of poor compliance. - Maintains all appropriate client records according to service unit and Area guidelines. Prepares and submits records of all patients and project contacts on the Area Mental Health Data Reporting System on a monthly basis. - Adheres to all Performance Improvement and Quality Management standards of the Area and Service Unit Mental Health/Social Service programs. - Works closely with the Santo Domingo Pueblo Division of Social Service, Law Enforcement, Educational, and other agencies to coordinate services for mental health patients who have serious family and other social problems. - Provides consultation to health professionals, physicians, nurses, alcoholism workers, social workers, psychologists, and other community agency staff regarding the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health and substance abuse problems on a case-by-case basis either through discussions about patients and families jointly assisted or by clarifying mental health aspects of clients of those agencies. - Facilitates program planning, development, and evaluation of child and adolescent mental health services by providing advisory and consultative services to the Health Center Director, other staff and other community service workers, i.e. police, probation officers, social workers, etc. Contacts with the community in general are to promote the cooperation and collaboration of community and tribal groups and government agencies to develop a better understanding and more efficient mental health program particularly in the area of children's emotional problems and related family emotional health. - Strives for the highest possible participation and cooperation, in all the contacts, i.e. patients, patient's families, police, social workers, and other Santo Domingo Pueblo and Santo Domingo Health Center staff, through effective mental health methods and techniques. This requires skill in gaining the confidence of the patients and families, many of whom are uncooperative, hostile, and tend toward destructive attitudes and actions. - Solicits the understanding and cooperation of families, most of who have severe socio-economic problems, while recognizing and considering these factors. - Assists with chronic cases. He/she assesses the situation, prepares reports of findings with recommendations as to appropriate action within the framework of mental health resources available. He/she must at all times be sensitive to cultural customs and standards in evaluating alternative solutions. - Takes leadership role in assessing and responding to Child/Adolescent/Family/Mental Health needs. - Develops social work/mental health services delivery systems, which are family-centered and reduce bureaucratic and administrative intrusions to the minimum necessary. This may involve assessment of needs, strategic planning and developing of networks with community members and human service providers identification of resources, re-design of current service delivery systems and development of new services and development of new services and activities for manage care. - Performs other duties as assigned by the Medical Officer. Qualifications: Experience: - A minimum of one year experience embracing work involving psychological diagnosis, treatment and teaching.
