The class specification for the position of Civilian Traffic Assistant involves the investigation and enforcement of traffic laws and ordinances as related to automobile accidents and to assist in the protection of life and property on roadways. Work follows standard operating procedures; however, the employee has the latitude to determine what procedure or precedent to follow based on the work situation. Civilian Traffic Assistants are confronted with various situations which require quick assessment and the use of good judgment to resolve issues that may arise. The Civilian Traffic Assistant operates a vehicle equipped with Indian River County Sheriff’s Office markings, emergency traffic lights, sign board, gas cans, lock out tools, tire changing tools, jumper cables, mobile radio and other electronic data communication devices, and related law enforcement equipment.
