JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, this role supports public relations communication strategies to elevate the College’s reputation. Responsibilities include creating and distributing content across multiple channels, supporting media relations, and assisting with campus-wide communications initiatives. Serves as a supporting contact for public records matters at the College and supports, manages public records requests, ensuring compliance with Florida public records laws, FERPA, and HIPAA, while maintaining confidentiality.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in writing and editing press releases, news articles, newsletters, social media posts, and other communications materials to ensure consistency with the College’s messaging.
- Serve in support of the Public Information Officer (PIO), assisting with incident related information requirements.
- Coordinate with the PIO to manage media inquiries, arrange interviews, and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets.
- Assist in planning and executing media events, including press conferences, product launches, and other College events. Collaborate with the Strategic Events Team to ensure effective communication before, during, and after events.
- Supports and responds to public records requests in coordination with the PIO and relevant departments. These requests may be from the public, media, and other stakeholders, ensuring compliance with Florida public records laws, FERPA, and HIPAA. Safeguards the confidentiality and security of sensitive student and employee information and acts as the primary contact for all public records inquiries for the College
- Support the development of internal communications materials such as emails, memos, and newsletters to keep faculty, staff, and students informed about the College initiatives.
- Track media coverage and performance, prepare regular reports for the PIO and senior leadership that highlight key metrics and insights.
- Assist the PIO in managing communications during emergencies, including drafting statements, coordinating updates, and monitoring public response.
- Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in communications, public relations, social media, or related areas.
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with experience in AP style.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with social media management tools and content creation platforms.
- Familiarity with design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) and web content management systems is a plus.
- Professional public interaction experience is required.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Familiarity with local and statewide affairs is preferred
- Understanding of or willingness to learn Florida’s Government-in-the-Sunshine laws.
- Ability Proficiency in English, both spoken and written
- to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Bilingual writing and speaking skills in Spanish is preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College
