Since 1885, the Indiana Academy of Science has supported scientific research and education among our state's scientists, from trainees to professionals. It is one of the oldest scientific professional membership organizations in the United States and is the only multidisciplinary scientific organization in the state of Indiana. The Academy is dedicated to promoting scientific research, sharing scientific information, improving education in the sciences, and encouraging communication and cooperation among scientists.
The Indiana Academy of Science accomplishes its mission by bringing together leading and emerging scientists, science educators, and collegiate science students from Indiana, the Midwest, and beyond. The Annual Academy meeting attracts more than 300 attendees with more than 200 posters, presentations, and workshops each year. The Academy sponsors events throughout the year to engage members in discipline-specific and broad-interest activities such as Science with a Twist casual conversation nights and Bioblitz field studies. Research, community, and DEI grant funding opportunities are available to members. The Academy also sponsors youth activities such as the Junior Science Talent Search. The Academy publishes the Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science scientific journal and offers books and other publications for purchase.
Position Overview
- The Director of the Indiana Academy of Science is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Indiana Academy of Science and reports to the President of the Indiana Academy of Science. This position works closely with the Academy Council and associated Academy committees to increase Academy membership, identify and apply for grant funding, plan and execute the Annual Academy Meeting, and complete other organizational operations as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Increase overall membership and participation in the Academy by individuals with academic or science industry backgrounds
- Manage a database of grant opportunities, identify new grant opportunities, and write grants to support Academy initiatives
- Coordinate planning of the Annual Academy meeting, including overseeing site logistics, working with Section Chairs to solicit and manage abstract submissions, and coordinating the schedule and budget
- Develop connections and new opportunities for engagement by the Academy with Indiana academic institutions, businesses, and other organizations
- Communicate consistently with members about Academy activities and opportunities
- Maintain general operations of the Academy, including but not limited to the managing the annual calendar, updating the organizational handbook, overseeing committee organization, identifying budget needs, maintaining Academy files, and coordinating media requests or press releases
- Serve as the Academy representative to AAAS, NAAS, and AJAS
- Report regularly to the Academy Council and Treasurer on Academy activities and accomplishments
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- 2-3 years of experience in operations management, including
- Excellent organizational and written and oral communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Association Executive certification or a masters degree in a related area such as nonprofit administration, communications, or business administration
- Experience managing a budget of more than $150K
- Experience in membership development and project management
- Experience with fundraising and grant writing in the non-profit sector
Salary Range and Benefits: $55,000-$65,000 depending on qualifications plus benefits stipend
