Job Summary

The Assistant Director position will report to the Director and will be part of a leadership responsible for the oversight of the grants team.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides back up and support to the Administration team in times of heavy deadlines and proposal / award overload.
  • Manages a team of grant administration professionals to define and implement strategies for efficient review of proposals and the effective negotiation and intake of awards.
  • Provides expert guidance on complex negotiation issues and consultation regarding overall adherence to federal, state, and private regulations as they apply to a broad range of sponsored activities.
  • Participates and leads efforts to formalize standard operating procedures to provide consistency throughout the office.
  • Advises and assists in planning, directing, and reporting the activities of the programs administered by the Office of Research, and assists in developing and implementing procedures for said programs.
  • Responsible for maintaining an inclusive working environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director or other appropriate administrator.

General Responsibilities

  • Advises faculty on long-term financial viability of department / center given multiple grants and contracts from various sources with differing project end dates.
  • Locates and identifies sources of outside funding on own accord.
  • Develops budget proposals and monitors the resulting awards received for academic and research projects and programs.
  • Interprets regulations and guidelines of multiple programs funding with complex and broad guidelines for spending.
  • Evaluates contract compliance and advises others on contractual rights and obligations.
  • Requests or approves amendments to contract terms or contract extensions.
  • Prepares bids or request for proposals (RFPs), including specifications and requirements; negotiates contract terms and participates in the determination of acceptable bids.
  • Ensures compliance with sponsor terms, university policies / procedures and federal / state regulations.

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field

  • Experience across the research administration lifecycle with multiple institutions, including higher education

  • Working Conditions / Demands

    This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
