Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director of Advising in defining the overall direction of the College's academic advising program and the deployment of advising resources in support of the goals and priorities established by the College.
  • Provides direct supervision of a subset of College advisors as assigned and provides ongoing assessment and support for direct reports. In addition, leads or serves on hiring committees and assists with the training of new advisors. Serves as a resource for all College advisors and support ongoing staff development. Serves as the first level of appeal on questions of advisor error or misconduct involving advisors reporting to them.
  • Takes the lead on projects and initiatives as assigned by the Director of Advising or developed in consultation with the Director. Serves as liaison between College advising and the academic departments and programs served by their direct reports. Represents College advising on school, campus, and system-level committees, liaising effectively with other schools and offices.
  • Assists with the planning and management of New Student Orientation, providing direct supervision of advisors and liaising with students, parents, and campus partners.
  • Serves as part of the advising leadership team and collects data and prepares reports in support of program assessment efforts. In addition, develops and maintains knowledge of advising theory and practice, student development theory, best practices in student engagement, retention, degree completion, and post-graduation success.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define academic advising methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high-priority academic advising projects / initiatives.
  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines / deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project / multi-phase academic advising initiatives.
  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions.
  • Manages high-level assignments and allocation of academic advising resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments / areas / teams; may coordinate large-scale academic advising projects with campus or system-wide implications.
  • Makes budgetary recommendations and proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry academic advising standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols / procedures to address business needs.
  • Works collaboratively with other academic advising leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies / procedures.
  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering, and advisory committees; acts as consultant to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to academic advising.
  • Resolves or escalates academic advising related complaints.

    EDUCATION

  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs, counseling, or related field
  • WORK EXPERIENCE

    Required

  • 4 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field.
  • 1 year of management experience or demonstrated leadership of a project or people
  • Preferred

  • 5 years of professional experience in academic advising or a closely related field, with 3 years of academic advising experience
  • Advising experience at IU Bloomington and ideally in the College of Arts and Sciences
  • College teaching, program development, or supervisory experience
  • Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired

    This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
