Job Summary
This position plays a vital role supporting the global research community by executing essential functions of the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center (BDSC). The BDSC houses the world's largest and most-used collection of fruit flies and distributes samples to ~2,000 labs in 54 countries each year.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Collaborates with resource personnel to execute standard operating procedures and related processes.
- Ensures health and safety of living research organisms (fruit flies).
- Maintains accurate records of completed activities.
- Ensures equipment is maintained according to expected levels.
- Monitors and inventories supplies.
- Cleans and maintain equipment associated with the resource.
- Performs administrative duties such as preparing invoices, answering phone calls, printing paperwork to accompany shipped samples, and ordering supplies.
- Delivers supplies, including driving a van, to our backup location.
- Trains new part time personnel in laboratory procedures.

Working Conditions / Demands
The role requires the ability to communicate effectively and to notify supervisors when necessary. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to perform tasks related to supporting scientific resource activities including moving objects up to 25 pounds and working near mechanical equipment. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.
