Job Summary
This position reports to the Dean and works in close consultation with other key administrative HLS leadership.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Responsible for the management and implementation of marketing, branding, and publicity activities for the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS).
- Ensures that all activities in support of the HLS strategic plan are presented effectively and successfully to all audiences and constituencies in order to fortify the HLS brand, support its mission, engage faculty and staff, and align with the university's branding strategy and guidelines.
- Serves as the HLS liaison to University Communications and Marketing, the university's central communications and marketing organization, and other university offices and campus units as appropriate and is a key advisor, contributor, and participant in the HLS short- and long-term strategic planning in the areas of marketing and publicity.
- Takes the lead in the design, development, and execution of the HLS marketing strategy, publicity, and communications plan (the plan will target internal and external audiences through earned, owned, and paid media, addressing the school¿s needs, including recruitment and enrollment marketing; specific communications to faculty, staff, students, alumni; the broad academic activities of HLS; and the promotion of major HLS events and conferences).
- Implements disciplined approaches to brand and marketing strategies, creative development, and media deployment.
- Tracks, reports, and analyzes marketing metrics to determine the effectiveness of marketing and communications efforts and establish strategies and plans to meet the needs of the School, including the use of CRM tools to develop and maintain lists for various audiences.
- Develops and implements a strategy for leveraging and raising the national profile of the dean as a thought leader and the scholars of HLS and coordinate media relations, including pitching stories, both internal and external to IU.
- Leads the creative and administrative functions of the HLS Office of Marketing and Communications, supervising and providing direction to its members.
- Acts as an integral participant in evaluating and determining the office's culture and structure to reach the optimum balance with both personnel and process.
- Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to general marketing and communications methodologies and standards.
- Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives.
- Makes budgetary recommendations / proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
- Conducts research on emerging technologies, services, protocols / processes, and / or standards in support of communications efforts.
- Responsible for the implementation of new protocols / procedures to address business needs.
General Responsibilities
Hires, trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, sets goals and objectives, determines staffing needs, and directs the work of a team of Communications Generalists and / or Communications Assistants.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
