Role Overview:
As the Director of Nursing Services (DON), you will be responsible for providing effective clinical and administrative services for the nursing department. In this position, you will be responsible for executing the vision, mission, and goals of the nursing department by collaborating and engaging the nursing support team and other departments. As the DON, you will ensure the facility meets all regulatory, compliance, and quality of care standards.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $120,016.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Lead, review, develop, and evaluate strategic planning of policies, procedures, and nursing protocols.
- Provide leadership for the ongoing development and enhancement of patient services, patient care and programming.
- Assure effective planning and staffing strategies for the nursing department.
- Actively participate in hospital-wide planning and evaluates efforts according to hospital / Nursing services’ priorities.
- Prepare, review, and analyze on budget information and make recommendations to optimize utilization of resources.
- Prepare and review compliance reports to submit to the appropriate authority.
- Monitor and implement programs and activities that support effective human resource management. Provides oversight that such issues are handled in an appropriate and timely manner according to reasonable practices.
- Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
- Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
- If the position is located at a hospital facility the DON will assume an active leadership role with the hospital’s Governing Body, Medical Staff and other leaders in the hospital’s decision-making structure and process.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
- License to practice nursing in the State of Indiana as a Registered Nurse.
- Four (4) years full-time professional administrative or supervisory experience in developmental disability, geriatric, or psychiatric nursing within an institutional setting.
- Must hold and maintain a CPR certificate.
- Must stay current with behavioral intervention training.
- Ability to promote professionalism and growth of a nursing department.
- Broad critical thinking skills to solve complex situations.
- Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations and standards in nursing practice, facility, and patient care.
- Ability to effectively communicate with others at all levels of the organization as well as external entities.
- Ability to use MS Office applications and electronic patient records.
- Ability to mentor, train, and present to a large population.
- Ability to serve as a patient advocate.
- Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
- Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
- Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
