The Assistant Vice President (AVP)/ Accounting Controller Finance & Compliance plays a critical leadership role in overseeing financial operations, regulatory compliance, and accounting functions for the organization. This role is particularly focused on housing authority operations, public accounting practices, and financial compliance. The AVP will ensure adherence to government regulations, optimize internal controls, and support strategic financial initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting processes in compliance with GAAP and governmental accounting standards.
- Ensure adherence to HUD, IRS, and other regulatory requirements applicable to housing authorities.
- Lead internal and external audits, including coordination with public accounting firms and regulatory agencies.
- Manage financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and cash flow management.
- Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure financial accuracy.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to finance and accounting staff, ensuring a high-performance culture.
- Work closely with senior leadership to develop financial strategies that align with organizational goals.
- Monitor and interpret federal, state, and local regulations impacting housing authority finances and compliance.
- Collaborate with external auditors, legal teams, and financial institutions to ensure financial integrity.
- Prepare and present financial reports to senior leadership, board members, and external stakeholders.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Accounting Controller, CPA or CIA designation is highly desirable.
- 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in public accounting and housing authority operations.
- Strong knowledge of HUD financial regulations, government grants, and housing authority compliance.
- Proven experience in audit management, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external stakeholders.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with federal and state funding compliance.
- Strong analytical skills to assess financial risks and opportunities.
- Knowledge of nonprofit or governmental accounting standards.
- Ability to lead financial transformation initiatives and process improvements.
