Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is seeking a self-motivated Utility Coordinator Intern to join our team in May of 2025 for a 12-week internship in the Charlotte, NC office. As a Utility Coordinator Intern at ICE, you will gain valuable industry experience by working with our Utilities team. Internships with ICE allow you to continue your education with a real-world experience that will enhance your future academic experiences. There is room for growth within our organization for dedicated civil engineering professionals. All employment offers are contingent upon the applicant successfully completing drug and background screenings. Internships provide an opportunity to be part of a diverse and engaged community of professionals and to be treated as a respected and valued member of the ICE team. Once qualified candidates have been identified, the recruiting team will schedule interviews.

This internship spans 12 weeks, starting sometime in May and ending in August. The exact start and end dates will be decided during the recruitment process.
 
The Utility Coordinator Intern will gain industry experience by working with the ICE team to collect and analyze utility data for the preparation of highways, bridges/structures, hydrology/hydraulic design.
 
Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance, technical support, and coordination for utility adjustment efforts to resolve design conflicts with utilities impacted by projects.
  • Aid the Utility Coordinator to manage utility relocations with state, local municipalities and independent utility companies
  • Perform technical engineering, administrative and managerial work to support the design, development and implementation utility of relocation plans
  • Conduct Right of Way research to determine utilities with prior occupancy rights for reimbursement of relocation costs, as well as perform field surveys to assess existing utility facilities.

Qualifications
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook. 
  • Strong math and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Demonstrated research skills and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to work well individually and in a team.
  • Ability to work with project managers and engineers.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation Inroads/Geopak, and/or OpenRoads software is a plus.
  • Flexibility in wide array of tasks given.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Organization and planning skills.
  • Knowledgeable in job cost, scheduling, safety, and construction concepts.
 
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college degree program focused on Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Prior internship experience is preferred, but not required.

Internships do not always include mentorship; however, we believe it is a crucial part to the success of our program. ICE interns are paired with more experienced staff members in order to provide guidance and support throughout the internship process. They will report directly to a team lead who will provide regular feedback, special training, guidance, evaluation, and support. The lead will provide information about their career path, as well as assisting the intern with exploring career opportunities at the firm, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources.
 
We foster collaborative learning environment where interaction with our dedicated team of engineers encourages students to develop ideas and make mistakes. Collaborative learning also involves learning from peers and fellow interns. The primary goal of the internship is to gain as much experience as possible. While an intern may not have major tasks assigned to them, they should pay close attention to all the steps that go into completing the project. At the end of the internship, the intern should be confident to individually manage project tasks and work independently. ICE’s dedicated recruiting team will assist the intern with full-time employment opportunities, once they are ready to graduate.
 
Physical and Environmental Requirements
This position predominantly involves up to 8 hours per day at a computer workstation, with occasional standing and walking. The employee may occasionally lift lightweight office supplies and materials, typically not exceeding 20 pounds. The office environment is indoors, characterized by controlled temperatures and minimal exposure to adverse conditions. Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods.
 
Expected Hours of Work 
The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily. Work schedules may vary according to the project schedule. This is an onsite position reporting to the ICE office 5 days a week.
