SUMMARY: Provides leadership for 6-12 interscholastic athletics, fostering a culture of academic and athletic excellence. Oversees operations, ensures Title IX compliance, and manages facilities, personnel, and budgets. Partners with school leaders to support student-athlete development and uphold program integrity at all competition levels.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Athletic Administration, Educational Leadership, or a related field
- Valid Michigan administrative certification or ability to obtain
- Minimum seven years of K-12 experience, including at least three years in athletic administration and/or coaching
- Knowledge of MHSAA regulations and Title IX requirements
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable athletic environment that supports student-athletes of all backgrounds and abilities
- CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 60 days
- Strong written, verbal, and public speaking skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a head coach at the high school or collegiate level
- Background in athletic facility management and capital improvements
- Experience managing athletic budgets and operations
- Knowledge of athletic training and sports medicine protocols
- Experience in hiring, mentoring, and evaluating coaches
- Proven success in fundraising and community partnerships
- Demonstrated ability to support student-athlete academic success
- Strong parent and community relations track record
Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Leadership
- Directs 6-12 interscholastic athletic programs, ensuring alignment between middle and high school athletics
- Develops and implements a strategic vision for district athletics, including program standards and evaluation metrics
- Ensures compliance with MHSAA regulations, Title IX requirements, and district policies
- Establishes program policies and procedures in partnership with district and school leaders
- Promotes equitable access to athletics by fostering inclusive participation opportunities
- Evaluates program effectiveness and makes data-driven improvements
Personnel Management
- Recruits, supervises, and evaluates coaching staff and athletic personnel
- Coordinates professional development and ensures certification compliance
- Oversees scheduling and management of game workers, officials, and event staff
- Conducts regular coaching staff meetings and performance reviews
Student-Athlete Development
- Develops positive relationships with student-athletes and coaching staff to foster mentorship, leadership, and personal growth
- Monitors academic eligibility and supports student success
- Implements character development and leadership programs
- Assists student-athletes with college recruitment and scholarship opportunities
- Oversees athlete recognition programs and awards
- Promotes a culture of sportsmanship, integrity, and multi-sport participation
Operations
- Coordinates with the Director of Facilities on maintenance and improvements
- Collaborates with Community Education to schedule facility use for athletic events
- Oversees game-day operations, including security, staffing, and emergency procedures
- Manages equipment standards, inventory, and purchasing
- Supervises athletic training services and medical response protocols
- Coordinates transportation for athletic events
Community Relations & Communication
- Serves as liaison to athletic boosters, parent groups, and community organizations
- Represents the district at league, conference, and state association meetings
- Oversees department communication, including public relations and promotional materials
- Develops community partnerships and sponsorships to support athletics
- Responds to and resolves parent and community concerns
- Maintains strong relationships with middle and high school administrators, coaches, and student-athletes to ensure program cohesion and shared expectations
Financial Management
- Oversees the athletic department budget and team activity accounts
- Manages gate receipts, concessions, athletic pass programs, and revenue generation
- Ensures payment of officials and event staff in compliance with district financial policies
- Administers student activity fees and oversees need-based waiver programs
- Ensures fundraising compliance and coordinates with booster organizations on financial support initiatives
Reports to: High School Principal
Supervises: Coaches & students engaged in school athletic programs
Terms of Employment: Full-time, Exempt, 12-month administrative position
Compensation: $93,000 – $103,000 salary, commensurate with experience; comprehensive benefits package
