JOB CLASSIFICATION: CHIEF ENGINEER
DATE: 5/02/01 PAY STATUS: DAILY
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION:
- Five years experience on harbor tugs or line boats
- State of Residence Driver’s License (Preferred not required)
- Person In Charge (PIC) Certification
- Current First Aid/CPR Certificate
- Valid TWIC
MAJOR FOCUS:
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFE MECHANICAL OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE TOWING VESSEL IN A FASHION THAT EXCEEDS THE HIGHEST STANDARDS WITHIN THE TOWING INDUSTRY. CONSIDER PUBLIC AND CREW MEMBER SAFETY A PRIME RESPONSIBILITY TO BE SAFEGUARDED AT ALL TIMES. PROMOTE AND MAINTAIN THE UTMOST INTEGRITY AND THE HIGHEST STANDARD OF SERVICE TO ALL CREW MEMBERS AND CUSTOMERS. SET AND MAINTAIN A SAFETY CULTURE ONBOARD THE ENTIRE VESSEL IN EVERY DEPARTMENT.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Recommend actions regarding the maintenance and preventative maintenance of the vessel.
- Possess and utilize excellent mechanical skills including plumbing, electrical, HVAC and diesel engines.
- Possess superior organizational and record keeping skills.
- Manage and operate vessel equipment within legal requirements of USCG, FCC, COE, and other pertinent regulatory agencies.
- Compile, review and maintain rough and official vessel logs.
- Interact with the customer in a professional and courteous fashion.
- Monitor safety issues on vessel and correct in consultation with the Master.
- Establish a safety “culture” and take corrective action as situations may require.
- Be aware of and follow all IMS policies and procedures and all customer policies and procedures related to vessel and vessel component maintenance.
- Participate in drills as required.
- Assist in Safety Audits as mandated by company policy and as circumstances require.
- Identify tasks and capital projects and prioritize projects in regards to safety and production and cost considerations.
- Participate in Marine Department meetings as required by the company.
REQUIREMENTS/EDUCATION:
The skill set and physical qualifications listed below are general requirements for this position. The actual exertion level (and frequency of use) can and does fluctuate depending on the individual tasks being performed.
- 5 Years experience as Mate or Second Mate demonstrating the ability to handle growing levels of responsibility or an equivalent time in the position as Engineer or Assistant Engineer.
- Computer literacy in conjunction with administrative skills.
- Training and experience in the operation of on-board control, communication, lifesaving, navigation, and fire-fighting systems.
- Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to develop and execute innovative solutions to operational problems.
- Excellent career record in the marine industry.
- Possess and demonstrate superior judgement, analytical ability, performance under pressure, and other skills necessary during routine operation or emergency response aboard a towing vessel.
- Be able to adequately assist in training, mentoring, coaching and counseling programs and sessions.
- Thoroughly understand all pertinent regulations and laws under which the vessel operates.
- Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
- Logically complete work assignments.
- Demonstrate well-developed inter-personal skills.
- Set and achieve high standards of performance.
- Demonstrate initiative and be able to make progress on multiple assignments under time constraints.
