Summary:
The Senior Director/VP of Data Science will lead our Data Science team, driving innovation at the intersection of biology, machine learning, and engineering. This high-impact role combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical expertise to apply data science principles to synthetic biology (enzyme, metabolic, and genome engineering), and industrial fermentation. You will set the direction for building and leveraging AI models, enhancing our technology platform, and directly influencing product time and cost to market. 

This position oversees a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, fosters cross-functional collaboration, and engages with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with business objectives. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Define and implement the company’s data science strategy for protein engineering, genome-scale modeling, and AI-driven product development. 
• Develop algorithms and tools for actionable insights, such as genotype-phenotype modeling, network modeling, and sequence prediction. 
• Build, mentor, and retain a high-performing Data Science team. 
• Provide technical and managerial guidance to team members, fostering career growth. Partner with Platform and Product teams to accelerate innovation and meet user needs. 
• Present insights and advancements to diverse audiences, including senior management, external collaborators, and public forums. 
• Advance the company's technology platform through cutting-edge AI, machine learning, and bioinformatics tools. 
• Contribute to the company’s IP portfolio with novel approaches and methodologies. 
• Set and communicate clear objectives aligned with company goals. 
• Manage project plans and ensure timely execution to meet business priorities. 

Requirements

Qualifications: 

• Ph.D. in machine learning, bioinformatics, systems biology, or a related field.  
• 10 years of experience in industry or academia, with a proven track record of technical and managerial excellence.  
• Expertise in machine learning, bioinformatics, and analysis of high-throughput biological datasets.  
• Strong publication and patent record with significant public speaking experience.  
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary startup environment.  
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with a high EQ and a hands-on “player-coach” mindset. 

Physical Requirements: 

The employee frequently is required to bend, stand, walk, sit, and use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel items (i.e. lab instruments).  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 lbs. of weight.  The employee frequently is required to sit in a chair and be mobile.  The employee may need to reach with hands and arms.

Salary: $225,000 - $275,000 DOE
