Director of Internal Audit
William & Mary (W&M) seeks an experienced, collaborative, and strategic Director of Internal Audit to ensure the university is prepared to address complex strategic and financial challenges in the ever-changing public education landscape. William & Mary, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, founded in 1693. The university is home to 680 full-time instructional faculty members : 419 are tenured, 97 are tenure-track, and 164 are non-tenure eligible. W&M faculty members are recognized for excellence in teaching and for outstanding research mentoring at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The undergraduate student-faculty ratio of 13 : 1 is the lowest among top public universities. Eighty-five percent of undergraduate classes have fewer than 40 students; nearly half have fewer than 20 students. With Carnegie classification as a Doctoral University with High Research Activity, W&M aims to strengthen and grow its research portfolio.
The Office of Internal Audit supports the respective missions of William & Mary, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and Richard Bland College by developing, implementing, and directing a comprehensive internal audit program that ensures the efficiency, effectiveness, compliance, and control of operations.
The Director of Internal Audit reports to the Committee on Audit, Risk, and Compliance of the Board of Visitors and is responsible for the administration and operation, with consultation from the President of the university, of the Office of Internal Audit, and for the formation of an annual Audit Plan. The Office of Internal Audit provides consulting, advisory, compliance, financial, operational and technology services. The Director is responsible for oversight of the work of all the auditors in the office, for the efficient and effective use of office resources, and is the primary liaison to all external audit entities.
The ideal candidate will possess a blend of financial expertise, leadership acumen, analytical abilities, and a deep understanding of higher education's unique challenges and opportunities. The Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the university's future.
Required Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or other appropriate area from an accredited college or university.
- Extensive experience in internal or external auditing and experience in a supervisory / management role.
- Thorough knowledge of internal auditing standards and techniques, internal control, compliance standards, Enterprise Risk Management methodologies and generally accepted accounting principles.
- Strong analytical skills with ability to identify and assess risk and exposures across a wide variety of processes and demonstrated ability to analyze facts.
- Knowledge of higher education financial and reporting standards and demonstrated ability to comprehend and interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Strong project management and organizational abilities and demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate short and long-term plans.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, to interact effectively and professionally with faculty, staff and the public to include the Board of Visitors and other distinguished members of the university community.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain positive team relationships by demonstrating and supporting initiative, willingness to learn, flexibility, respect, cooperation, and commitment to the success of the Internal Audit Department.
- Knowledge of and compliance with the Institute of Internal Auditor's Code of Ethics and International Professional Practices Framework and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Code of Professional Conduct.
Preferred Qualifications :
This is a full-time position that will be performed on site in Virginia. The starting salary for this position is anticipated to range from $220,000-240,000, commensurate with experience.
